Make Ours a Double February OMG
February was a dotty kind of month for us in several ways. We were seeing Swiss Dots all over the place while we wrapped up our February OMG. The link to Patty’s linky finish party on Elm Street Quilts is open and we are happy to share. While this project wasn’t on our First Quarter Finish Along we dove headfirst into completing this quilt top.
February OMG Change Up
For ages we have admired this Make Mine A Double quilt block. At first, we had trouble finding the white with red Swiss dot fabric. Pushed to a back burner, it found itself in the limelight when the Sand Swiss dot fabric was obtained for our Color of the Month Block Connection. Thank you, thank you Riley Blake!
We ordered these luscious fabrics, and developed a plan. There are only 28 days to bring this quilt top to fruition.
Modifications to Make Ours
Certainly the pattern link above was our inspiration without a doubt. We chose to make HSTs instead of flying geese. Our test block showed us another area we chose to change:
The strip in the first and last row is no longer a 2.5″ square and a 2.5″ x 4.5″ rectangle. For one less seam, it has been replaced with a 2.5″ x 6.5″ rectangle. Once we decided those changes worked for us, Sue set about getting everything cut for me. Chain piecing ensued, making quick work of the HSTs for the remaining 10 blocks. Most of you know there was an oops block in there, too. Right around block four, plus we determined we didn’t have enough fabric.
Make Ours Big Enough
Initially, 12 blocks sounds like plenty of blocks for a baby quilt. Then we thought we should and could add sashing to make the quilt top bigger.
Since there was so much red in the fabric overall, we used the red bandana fabric sashing vertically in 2.5″ strips. For additional length, the navy strips are 3.5″ wide and they run horizontally. I am so thrilled with this bandana fabric – it looks SO cute.
Make Our a Quilt Top
Ta-Da! A quilt top eeked out for our February OMG project. Sewing just wrapped up last night which explains the semi-dark photo. It may be the end of February but the winter is far from over in these parts!
Now we need to find just the perfect backing, and those little paisleys in the bandana prints are inspiring me for the quilting motif.

However you made it, your top certainly looks lovely!
Just had to see this one again!!! I downloaded the block pattern – So very neat! I do see one in my future when I get tired of thinking too hard!!!! LOL
Congrats on your finish. Love the bandanna fabric. You are inspiring me to take out my blue bandana chevron UFO and finish it.
Hello Roseanne and Sue, This quilt is definitely a two thumbs up winner! I especially like the variety of sashing sizes you used. By doing that, it did indeed balance the fabrics superbly and it also makes it unique. We have been with out the internet for the past 3 days, due to a snow storm. I just about finished organizing an overflowing plastic tote with scrap fabrics into a very nicely organized system. I can see my very own Make Mine A Double Quilt Top out of several varieties of newly discovered treasures. Thank you so much for sharing all of your fun and fabulous quilting adventures with us! Have a great day!
I love this block pattern! Love your quilt!
Oh! I really like the dual-color sashing – works terrific with the interwoven star points. 🙂
Roseanne, your quilt top is lovely — you did a great job!
Wow! You did it and fast! I really like how the stars join and love love bandanna fabric 💕😊
Such a great finish. Love both of those fabrics (red and blue) and can’t wait to see the quilting.
I’m loving those fabrics. Those bandanna prints with the dots are perfect.
Roseanne! I love how you chose to make your one block bigger and not sew like fabric to like fabric!!! The quilt is looking great! And the bandana fabric – perfect!
PS … wordpress is not letting me “like” your post … just want you to know that I do LIKE it! 🙂
It’s turned out gorgeous and well done on finishing despite the hiccup of needing more fabric. I look forward to your quilting of it.
This is so soooo adorable! Me thinkst you need come cowgirl fabric for the back! Good job eeking out this finish!
Wonderful job on your quilt top. Thanks for linking up with Elm Street Quilts One Monthly Goal and congrats on your project.
Great finish in your dotty month! Bandana prints are so cute and it was a perfect choice for this pattern. Congrats on a finish! Now will you teach me how to “FINISH”!! I have starts all over the place and not very many finishes!
I love the way this turned out. The sashing is just rght and the decision to use both colors in it is so much fun. You will find a terrific back. I like that it is gender neutral – so are you looking for a gender neutral back? Or patriotic for the 4th of July baby? Just wondering your thoughts on that. Happy WDay!
You made it! Happy Dance!
It couldn’t get any cuter!!!
Wonderful finish Roseanne. It has inspired me to print off the pattern and pull out some old cowboy neck scarves I have. I think they will be the perfect combination. Thanks. Linda
Congratulations on your finish it’s a great quilt! I want to try that block!
This is a great quilt. I didn’t even know they were from bandanas. The quilt is lovely and looks like a cozy vintage design. As a mom of 2 sets of twins, I love the double stars hugging one another!!
It is a wonderful top! I knew you would get it done. Great job.
What I like best is how the bandana fabric doesn’t make the baby quilt feel stereotypically ‘country or cowboy or campy’ It is just a unique addition to the overall effect – The Dotted Swiss is the same type of thing only in a more ‘girlie, frou-frou’ way…perhaps they balance each other to where one gets to appreciate them as fabrics in a quilt rather than getting mentally caught up in their ‘stereotypes’.
Great job!
Yay! You did it! It is a really fun pattern and the quilt is really nice! Love those dots!
Now THAT my friend is quite the sparkling quilt. I may just have been given a squirrel…
How cute did this quilt top turn out! You made a great choice to include the bandana sashing. Is this quilt going to be sold in your Etsy shop?
Congrats on your finish. Your piecing is so neat and crisp. xx
