Nautical Pillow Shams Update – December OMG

Not too long ago I asked for assistance in finding some fabric that resembles shiplap.  As expected, I have received several very helpful suggestions (quilting people are really the best!) and then placed an order.  The fabric is for some pillow shams requested by a good friend for a nautical theme.

On the left is the suggestion she sent for the shams, and on the right is the shiplap fabric I purchased from eQuilter.com out of Colorado.  By the way, they have a fabulous selection of fabrics!  If you do a small internet search, you will find that there is a range of dimensions given for a regular pillow sham.  The width is consistent at 20″ but the length varies from 26″ to 30″.  I asked Darlene to measure her pillows, and they came out to be 27.5″.  I’m so glad I asked!

I used her exact suggestion to make the templates for her nautical images.  It is easy to simply ‘draw’ around the shape, paste the .jpg into Word, resize to the desired height (in this case), and then print.  The print outs were very blurry but gave the general impression of the image.  You can see in the photo above that the images have been transferred to navy fabric and are awaiting my machine appliqué.  Once that is complete, they will be surrounded by white fabric as a frame.  The blocks will be sewn three across in two rows, just as in the suggestion photo.

We will use the shiplap fabric on the reverse side of the pillow as well.  I haven’t decided whether a flap or zipper will allow for the pillow removal.  Depending on the day, one method is the choice for that day.  I would like to get this complete in December so she can have the pillow shams she wants for 2018.

This is our December OMG (one monthly goal) to share on Elm Street Quilts, hosted by Patty.  For this month, I would like to complete the appliqué of the nautical pieces for both pillow shams.  Take a look at the link to see what others have set for their monthly goal.

I was just doing a few minutes of appliqué tonight. I think they are going to look fine – I’m just using navy thread so you can’t really see how they are attached. ~smile~ Roseanne
