November OMG Finish – Evening Star Flimsy

Patty at Elm Street Quilters hosts a monthly link up to post a goal and then at the end of the month, share the finish.  This is the November Finish Link-up website where we will share our post and flimsy picture.  Here is the exact wording of our November OMG (one monthly goal):

We will set our November OMG to complete the Evening Star quilt top.  I am confident we can meet this goal.

Yes, I had good cause to feel confident and we were able to complete the quilt top.  Here is a little bit of history on the Evening Star quilt.  The center of this block is comprised of nine-patch pieces and they were collected as extra blocks from baby quilts gifted over the years.  It is fun to see blocks that were from Jaxson, Carson, Cecelia, Ruby, Gus, Elliott, Dominic and others.

Variable-Star

In this quilt, the cute nine-patches are surrounded by a white star and blue background.  Of course, we had a small mishap in October by running out of fabric or this would have been an October OMG!  I shared a few pictures of blocks as we completed them.  I worked on them in no particular order:

We decided to add a three inch finished size border all around the quilt top to give it a more finished look.  Otherwise the star points would end right at the binding, and we weren’t sure we liked that look.  I am rather surprised at the number of geometrical shapes that formed in the pattern with the squares and diamonds.  The stars might have stood out better had we put a sashing strip around each block.

Here is a closeup of some of the blocks.  You can see that the white fabric is actually a white-on-white random dot.  The nine-patch blocks are not all made with white fabrics – both the light blue and pink have a coordinating white dot with the highlight color for fun.  As a result of branching out into new patterns, it seems we have gotten away from making nine-patch quilts as often as we have in the past.

Especially relevant is to decide how to quilt this.  There are lots and lots of small areas so maybe I could try out some ruler work.  I welcome any suggestions.  Leave me your thoughts in the comments!  This may be one of those quilts that are very hard for me to part with.  It may or may not go in the Etsy shop.

Very nice! I love the pop of the bright colors in the 9-patches playing against the navy and white.

      Hi Lynette,
Oh thank you so much! I may try it again (after I save up some more 9-patches) with sashing next time. ~smile~ Roseanne

Ooooh! I love those sweet nine patches incorporated into sawtooth stars, and the dark background! I have a pile of vintage nines, some from my great grandmother, some that I have bought….and wouldn’t they look sweet in a similar design??***all excited*** It is a really fun top!

    • Roseanne says:

      Hi Sarah,
Ohhhhh, wow! This would look fabulous with some vintage nine-patches. You’d have to select a really cool background fabric – one that really brings out the specialness of those older fabrics. I would LOVE to see them and how you put it together! Oh now you have me all excited about it. I’m going to visit and follow your blog so I can see your progress on it. LOVE this idea! ~smile~ Roseanne

That’s really pretty – love the nine patches in the stars! Thanks for sharing on Midweek Makers 100!

    • Roseanne says:

Thank you, Susan! Congrats again on #100. Do you have any quilting suggestions? I sure would love to hear your thoughts. ~smile~ Roseanne

  4. Well, you’ve done it again: made another quilt I want to copy. 🙂 Love the stars and all the secondary designs that came out.

    • Roseanne says:

      Hi Peggy,
Don’t you think it would look better with sashing around the stars? They would stand out much better. Next time! ~smile~ Roseanne

      • Sashing would be nice and would showcase the stars but you would loose your secondary designs with the diamonds and squares. That’s why we make two so we can enjoy both patterns. 🙂

      • Roseanne says:

HAHA – oh THAT’S why!! Good thing you clued me in. Hmm, I’d better get busy on those nine-patches. It would be fun to compare. ~smile~ Roseanne

  5. Well you did it again….you created an absolutely awesome quilt! Can’t wait to see how you decide to finish it. 🙂

Beautiful! I love star quilts, and this is so pretty.

    • Roseanne says:

      Hi Susan,
I really love stars, too, now thanks to Peggy Cooper! She showed me how they can really shine. ~smile~ Roseanne

  7. Rachel @starpointquilting says:

Very pretty! We do almost match! I love stars on a dark background. 🙂

    • Roseanne says:

      Hi Rachel,
I think your centers are slightly different but certainly the same look. I don’t think my stars shine as well as yours because of the missing sashing. Lesson learned for next time! Thanks so much for visiting and commenting. I appreciate it. ~smile~ Roseanne

  8. Kathryn says:

Congrats on the finish, it looks fabulous. I have never done ruler quilting as I am not that advanced but whichever way you do it, I bet it will be great. What are you going to do with it when it is finished?

    • Roseanne says:

      Hi Kathryn,
That is the $1000 question – what to do with it when it is finished?!! I don’t have a plan for it right now, but I hate to give it away. I like looking at all the different centers and think about the babies that were once small enough for their quilt. ~smile~ Roseanne

  9. Jayne says:

What a pretty quilt! Well done! I love the 9-patch centers, and the polka dot fabric is a nice touch, too. Don’t finishes feel good?? I have managed to get several UFOs checked off my list this year!

    • Roseanne says:

      Hi Jayne,
What sweet comments! Thank you so much. I almost think of this quilt as a freebie since all the centers were from other quilts. Adding some additional fabrics don’t count, right?! Congrats on finishing up some UFOs – that is fabulous. ~smile~ Roseanne

  10. I guess I was staring at your quilt too long…all the stars disappeared into the pattern!

    • Roseanne says:

      Hi Shannon,
I know, right?!! I thought it was just me . . . I can’t see the stars now when I look at it. I think it needs the sashing between blocks. Am I going to pull it apart to add them? Umm, probably not. ~smile~ Roseanne

  11. Gretchen says:

This is a lovely quilt. Congratulations on meeting your goal!

    • Roseanne says:

      Good Morning Gretchen!
Thank you so much – that is so nice of you. I’m going to try one more month to see if can have a repeat. ~smile~ Roseanne

Your quilt came out beautiful. It is a great pattern and I like the white stars against a dark sky colored fabric.
