Another DrEAMi Dumbo Quilt

Earlier this year we made a Dumbo baby quilt for a coworker to give to her niece.  I had so much fun quilting this panel for several reasons.  Dumbo’s sweet smiling face gave me the confidence to FMQ however I wanted.  In that quilt, star fabrics were used in the borders and on the back. Therefore, many stars and hearts were quilted all over this piece.  Then we stumbled upon another panel in the quilt shop near my brother’s house.  I knew I HAD to pick up two more.  Itching to get into quilting this new project, it jumped to the top of the list and became June’s drop everything and make it (DrEAMi) project.

Dumbo #2

For the second Dumbo baby quilt, we elected to skip the borders completely.  As far as the quilting process, I fairly closely copied the original.  Outlining Dumbo’s shape initially went smoothly, and again Dumbo was quite encouraging.  Look at that sweet face!

Dumbo outline

I used a pretty gray Gutermann cone thread that I had picked up for a song earlier in the month along with my walking foot.

Dumbo FMQing

Still using the gray thread, I switched to my FMQing foot for some stippling in the body of the elephant.

It was then time for my go-to pale yellow Aurifil thread and more FMQing in the hat, ruffle and ears.  This gives the piece some different textures but I kept the stitches on the smaller side to keep it more to scale.  Straight-ish stitching following the lines of the hat and then loops back and forth in each of the three ruffle areas.  For the ears, I used a small loop stippling stitching, and then I could swing into the background with stars, hearts and small loops.

Dumbo Backing and Completion

We found this cute backing fabric on sale somewhere and thought that the friendly little stars are just perfect for this quilt.  We used a soft flannel binding in yellow just a bit darker than the light yellow background on the front.

You can see fairly well on the left photo Dumbo’s outline done in gray thread.  Sue had a willing model and no babies were hurt for our completion photo below!

Dumbo finished

One last shot sans sweet girl – not nearly as cute in my opinion.
