Quatrefoil Block – December Beehive Request

Rachel is the queen bee for December in our beehive called IG Honeybees, and she selected the Quatrefoil block.  This was a new one for us – I didn’t even recall seeing it in the list of blocks from Blossom Heart Quilts.

Rachel requested red, grass green, sunshine yellow and white for her blocks, plus she shared two sample blocks as well.  Sue pulled fabrics that fit her request and then started cutting and trimming the fabrics for me to begin sewing.

Quatrefoil Follies

My high school French gave me a clue as to the background or meaning of the name of this block as quatre means four and foil means leaves.  A bit more research gleaned the four-leaf clover aspect along with the Girl Scout cookie called Trefoil.  The design has quite a long history and has been used in many designs such as wallpaper, architecture, light fixtures, and even garbage cans.  I believe you will see this reflected in many of your surroundings once you start paying attention.

The design may have been new to us, but it wasn’t difficult to sew at all.  Last Saturday afternoon, we had both blocks finished with time to spare.  Here is a close up of the fabrics and colors used in each block:

Finally, here are the two completed blocks that I’ll be sending to Rachel.  I hope she enjoys them and is able to get her quilt top together shortly.

If you decide to make your own Quatrefoil blocks, I would surely love to see them!

These are such nice blocks. I love the way the yellow in the corners frames the blocks and sets up for a secondary design. This will be quite an interesting quilt.

  10. This made up well – plus from the first photo, I can see it lends a very different design when tilted ‘en pointe’. I’d be tempted to set it that way.
The colors do this design justice – just enough definition without obscuring the multitudenous secondary designs!
