Improvising On A Sleepsack

If you haven’t heard before (thank you for joining us!), we have a new great-nephew who just joined us last September.  He is a sweetie.  We will basically do anything for him within reason. ~smile~  So, when his mom asked if we could make him a new sleepsack we said yes.  Of course.  And to ourselves we said, What the heck is a sleepsack??

Here is an exact replica of DJ’s sleepsack.  It is basically jammies with no legs.  It would be similar to a nice warm blanket but much safer.  I don’t know how we ever survived all the dangers we were submitted to, but that’s another story.  Our sweet boy is only 4.5 months old but he is 27.5″ inches long.  He is outgrowing 9m clothes with his long legs!  This still fits him fine on his arms – in fact, the sleeves cover those sweet little fingers but he just sticks the whole sleeve in his mouth.  Never fear; nothing stops those fingers from finding his mouth. ~smile~

Sue and I approach every single task from two different angles.  I thought I would make a rough pattern and sew a whole new garment in microfleece.  Sue thought we could easily just add some length to the existing sleepsack.  Duh!  So, off to Joann’s I went to find some microfleece that matches best.  A nice solid gray will be perfect!

Mr. Sweet Boy has two other sleepsacks to lengthen I think, so I got half a yard.  You wouldn’t want to run out and have to return for more and there was a sale going on.  Need I say more about that?!  Anyhoo, the very bottom piece was removed very carefully by Sue.  She’s an expert ripper and I give her plenty of practice!  We even saved the little white piece of stabilizer so that it closely resembles the original.

It turns out I didn’t use that piece of stabilizer at all.  I used a knit stitch and tried not to stretch it at all.  I imagine they will give the sleepsack a try soon and report on it.  Someone had to check on my progress while sewing.  He did a great job watching my every move complete with chewing on one’s fingers. Finally, here is a photo of the completed sack.
