FMQ Play Time on Plus Playtime

I had the wild idea to FMQ a different pattern in each plus symbol in our second Plus Playtime.  Check out the details on our first Plus Playtime quilt as well as info on the pattern from Sandra at mmm Quilts.  It was a seriously wild idea because I don’t have that many patterns in my personal FMQ arsenal.  So I thought I would share a few photos of the ones I’ve come up with so far, and have executed after a fashion.

FMQ Loop-de-loo

loop de-loo

This is a fun pattern to stitch!  There’s no right or wrong direction – you just kind of go where the fabric sends you kitten.  I made the small little ‘e’ and then surrounded it with the bigger ‘l’ loop.  This picture also shows a good shot of the next really easy straight stitch.

FMQ Straight (ish) Stitch

Please refer to the picture above, because they look pretty darn good there.  As opposed to this picture where you can see a really, really good wobble!

straight-ish

The fabric is a solid black although it look dark gray in the photo.  I found this to be very easy and just used the edge of the free-motion presser foot as a guide.  At the end of each row I stitched in the ditch, or near it in some cases, over for the next row.  Upon reflection after the first section was done I wondered why I stitched so closely.  That ship has sailed!

FMQ Swirls

Swirls were stitched in two different sizes.  The main light gray has the larger sized swirls, while one of the small pluses has much smaller, tighter swirls.

I kind of wished I had used a lighter thread on the light gray area, but went with black because the backing fabric is also black.  At this point it is what it is because I’m not ripping it out!

FMQ Radiating Loops

My friend Vicki from Vicki’s Crafts and Quilting recently pointed me in the direction of Leah Day and her sharp stippling.  At the end of Leah’s video she shared another pattern, and this is my interpretation of that.  I’m calling it radiating loops, where I stitched a teardrop-shaped loop and then just echoed around it a few times.

Radiating loops

I’ve found that I really cannot see well when stitching on black with black thread so that may explain some of the misshaped loops.  That’s my excuse and I’m stitching with it!

FMQ Stippling

Stippling is my new favorite stitch since the David Taylor Michigan class.   This is my attempt on a small scale stippling and I am pretty happy with it.

Small stippling

Once the whole quilt is quilted and washed, my hope is that some of these inconsistencies will totally disappear.  It’s not like I will be studying it, and neither will Luke.  The quilty squishiness is already present, and I know that will only improve as I go along.  My next couple of pluses are going to include stiff stippling, more small scale stippling and loop-de-loos.  It is possible there might even be a small scale floppy feathers plus sign.  We’ll see!  If you have any other easy suggestions, I’d love to hear about it in the comments.

  1. Rose you are ROCKIN’ this!! THIS is how one gets better at FMQ; you just dive right in, throw caution to the wind, do not rip, and trust that it will sink in with laundering (it WILL I promise) and will provide quilty texture, and the recipient will ADORE it. You made my day my friend!! Woot freaking woot for you!!

Kudos to you for giving so many new things a try. That’s the only way to become proficient, and you are well on your way. Have you looked at Esther’s 22 samples posts, by any chance? She makes it pretty easy to plan, if you start at the bottom of the list with her first post from April 7, 2017.

Yeah!!! You’re doing great!!! I love it! Here’s an idea (not an original one from me) but mix it up … in one plus, do a swirl then an “e” (or 2) then a swirl … or a stipple with occasional swirls … or write your name and surround it with stipple or Luke’s name … keep having fun with it!
    Happy Happy Quilting! 🙂

You’re stitching is look good! I really like the double loops in the first photo – adds more interest to the design.

These are looking amazing. My only easy suggestion is: send them out to a longarmer. I cheat that way! :0)

Wow, your FMQ is really coming along. I can’t wait to finish a top to give it a try.

What a great way to try and practice quilting designs.

I need to get bolder in practicing some quilting designs. I usually wimp out because I am doing it on a real top. I just need to make a fake sandwich and get on with it. All your designs are lovely!

  10. Way to go Roseanne! I love your Free motion quilting❤️❤️. The swirls are my favorite. I need to follow your lead and do a practice quilt with lots of different stitches. Great idea!😊

  11. Your quilting looks awesome! Only you see things. No one else will. Way to go!

Wow I am in awe of your beautiful quilting; I love them all.

  13. I love what you did. It is good to work on these skills on quilts that will get used and loved. As you said, Luke will not notice, and, with time you won’t. If you use the same weight & kind of thread in the bobbin (or sometimes a little finer say 50 on top and 60 or sewfine on bottom) it often allows you to use two different colored threads on the top and bottom. I does depend on how happy your machine is with tension (and sometimes I find the loops and can make my machine loopy). I think it is fab and so glad you stretched your wings (I just got Leah Day’s calendar to stare at so I keep getting ideas).

  14. I’m so jealous— your FMQ looks really good! Great tip on the loop-de-loo I will try that — your Paisley’s look great (Leah’s design) — I think she’s a great teacher. I’m using some of her walking foot techniques on a few projects. Have a wonderful day!

What about some meandering that looks like water? It goes back and forth with rounded ends. I used it on my first jeans quilt.

Whoohoo, you are moving right along!! If only you could turn off the light on your sewing machine and shine a light in from the side. And no other lights on in the room-that is how I do it on the longarm and it really does help.

  17. It looks great! You are doing really well with your free motion. Well done!
