Charity Quilts First Check-In

We are joining in with 240+ other quilters and Sarah at Confessions of a Fabric Addict in sewing quilts or quilt tops for charity.  Five different charities have been selected for the focus of this quilt drive.  Hands2Help has been hosting the quilt drive for several years, but this is our first year.

Charity Begins at Home

Isn’t that a lesson that you learned as a young child, that charity begins at home?  It is a great lesson to learn, and we are happy to join in on this great collection.  We are going to be sharing our Hidden Stars quilt.  We made this in a quilt along that started in January.  Since the quilt top was just finished being pieced, the timing is just perfect.

Here is what the quilt top looks like along with the mono version.  I am rather pleased how the really dark values are dispersed throughout.  That one really light value, the yellow block almost appears white in mono vision.

Charity Hidden Star Quilt

This quilt just needs to be layered and then quilted.  Of course, I am stressing and dithering on just how to quilt it.  There is a hidden star in each block, hence the name, and I would like to really highlight them.  I have the hardest time focusing on those hidden stars, so it will take some concentration when quilting.  It might be easier to see the star in just one block, before it was sewn together.

I’m thinking maybe some stitching in the spikes of the star, and stitching in the ditch around the stars.  Then maybe a dense filler on the sides that points to the star, but that leaves the four-patch areas undone.  Thankfully, there is still a month to go before this need to be complete.  I welcome any suggestions in the comments please!  ~smile~

That’s going to be a beauty, no matter how you’ve quilted it.

Very cool block pattern, Roseann, and I like your idea for quilting so the hidden stars come out in all of their twinkling glory!! As long as you densely quilt the patches immediately adjacent to the stars, the difference between dense quilting and less quilting will make the stars more apparent. Will you quilt all of the stars the same, or with a variety of quilting designs?

What a wonderful quilt top, all the best with the quilting, I love the idea of donating too. I am on my second donation quilt, just doing some quilting on it. I forgot to photograph my first one before I posted away which really annoys me.

  4. Oh I see it now. It took me a fair bit of squinting and head-tilting but I seethe stars now 🙂 I am sure that your quilting pattern will reveal the hidden stars, beautifully!!!

    Beautiful quilt, Roseanne!

  6. I really love the spikes in the stars that you drew on the plexiglass. I was glad to hear others at first could not see the stars, but once I found them on the mono version, they were easy to see on the colored version. What charity will you be donating this quilt to? Take care, Mary.

Isn’t it funny how you can look one way at the quilt and see something and then look another way and see it completely differently! I love this quilt top and I think your quilty plan is both perfect and ambitious!

Hello Roseanne, This is a fantastic quilt and I think that your planned quilting design will be spectacular for the stars! I am positive that you will come up with a brilliant design for the remainder of the block, also. I am so inspired by the strength in confidence and skill you have achieved in the time I have been following you with your free motion quilting skills. Each and every quilt gets more daring and beautifully successful with your skills and willingness to try something new. So have a great time finishing the quilt and an even better time quilting it. I am looking forward to seeing it all completed! Have a fabulous day!! Loads of Hugs and Smiles being sent to you

  11. I think your idea is a good one for the quilting! I do have a clamshell ruler – I may give that a whirl!

Great idea to enhance the hidden stars! First I see the squares on the corners, need to be focused to stay on the stars!

  13. Hi Roseanne, I agree with Wendy — I like your plan for quilting. I’ve got a couple of quilts I plan on donating also. I’ve had them in storage so I’ll wash them first:)

  14. Love that pattern, and I like your idea for quilting!
