Dumbo, A Sweet Little Quilt is Finally Finished

Our third and dare I add, final, Dumbo baby quilt is complete. First, we made one for a coworker to give to her niece who was expecting her first baby. Then we made another one because we stumbled upon a panel when visiting my brother. Of course, when we stumbled upon that panel we purchased two – why wouldn’t we?! At long last, our third sweet little Dumbo baby quilt has been finished.

Slightly Different Dumbo

All three baby quilts were quilted using the same overall theme because why switch up something that works?! An overall stars-interspersed-with-hearts-and-loops design was used. It’s easy and can fill those little and big spaces quite nicely.

A shiny gray-purple thread on top and a soft white in the bobbin were my choices this time. I was happy to see that there was NO tension issues which is most notable on the reverse side. You will also see the outline of the elephant, especially his hat and collar.

Other differences include the borders added to the first version along with a different backing, and also binding color choices.

Dumbo Similarities

I used the same stitching design in our sweet elephant’s ruffled collar, hat, ears and body. The collar and hat has elongated loops, a smallish stipple in his body, and wee loop-de-loops in his ears gives Dumbo some texture. I love his sweet face.

This nifty backing fabric was also used on the second version of this quilt, and who doesn’t like softly muted smiling stars?!

Amazing Dumbo

Before the final reveal, the message Amazing Things Will Happen is just a great one for a baby. Or anyone, actually.

We chose a snappy dark gray binding which does a fabulous job of pulling out the gray in Dumbo and really highlighting him.

Since it’s been washed and dried, this baby quilt shrunk a little and it finishes at 33.5″ x 40″ . It is more than ready to wrap a sweet little bundle in our good wishes and love.

All Three Dumbos!

Here’s a little short slide show of all three versions. Different yet the same just like people.

We don’t have any more Dumbo quilt panels to work on . . . for now. IF we happen upon them in a quilt shop at some point in the future, I wouldn’t hesitate to make another one or two. This is finally a fourth quarter finish and I’ll be sharing on Instagram using the hashtag #2020FALq4finish. We’re shooting for a perfect 10 out of 10 projects complete this quarter!

  7. Oh no, Roseanne. He is so cute and so lovable that Dumbo is an unfair name. I believe he is kind and smart and I am going to call him Rosebud (a combination of Roseanne and Buddy). Perfectly quilted, as always. Love the expression on the baby’s face and that stuffed toy is just the right prop!!!
