Pieces SAL The Owl Quilt Block

First, let me wish my Aunt Jeanette a very Happy Birthday! She is 101 years-young today and still living on her own. Sue and I both wish we could be singing Happy Birthday with you today. In quilting news, we are following along with Melva’s sew-along called Pieces From the Past. Last week or maybe the week before she released the next block called The Owl Quilt.

Owl Pieces

In case you’re not familiar, Melva is hosting a Kansas City Star blocks sew-along. She had to receive special permission to share the original patterns that had been printed in the newspaper. Melva’s modernized most of the patterns so we don’t have to trace templates and such. Rotary cutter use is encouraged and there has been some paper piecing along the way, too. Even batter than all of that is the handwritten letters that were sent to her grandparents. They hosted many prisoners of war during WWII on their farm. Once the prisoners were released, many wrote to thank them for their kindness. Reading these special letters are beyond fabulous.

These are the fabrics we chose for our Owl Quilt block. Sue does the cutting and lays out the pieces for me. Even though she marks them well, I often still manage to mix them up or sew them wrong. Sheesh.

Owl layout and finish

We may have misread the cutting instructions. Okay, we did misread the instructions and cut fabrics incorrectly. Oh well. No one was harmed in the sewing of this block!

A little chain piecing happened and then bam – the block was all together, just like that. We’re not even going to discuss what might or might not be wrong because no one really cares. Right?!!

We really love how this fabric is coming together for this sampler quilt. Another block is released later this week but we are still staying current.

Hello Roseanne, HAPPY BIRTHDAY, AUNT JEANETTE!!! I hope that she has a marvelous Birthday! I also have to say that your block is just beautiful! I make a ton of mistakes while creating blocks and sometimes it is best just to go on and accept the block as it turns out. I look forward to seeing your next block and how your quilt will look with all of these amazing blocks you and Sue have created. Thank you for sharing and have a fantastic day!

Love those colors – so bright and cheerful. Don’t see an owl in there at all. Great that Aunt Jeanette is celebrating her 101st birthday, at home, and still able to take care of herself. So sorry you are missing the festivities but you are such a caring niece that I’m sure she understands.
