April OMG – Hexagon Baby Quilt Top

Good morning and happy April!  Wasn’t March just THE longest month ever?  We’re all out on the other side and we’re not sorry to see March go.  Nothing personal against the month – after all, our newest great-nephew was born on the 11th.  Thankfully, it is time to set a new One Monthly Goal (OMG) for April and share it on Patty’s Elm Street Quilts linky party.  We’re going to concentrate on a hexagon baby quilt top.

Hexagon Party Time

We’ve been seeing loads of different hexagon projects on Pinterest and in friends’ blog posts.  I wasn’t drawn to shape or even a project until Vicki shared her snowman table topper that we had to sew for ourselves.  It was followed in short order by our penguin table topper, which is a cute winner in my book.  Suddenly, Sue’s boss was expecting a baby in June and their favorite theme is the hexagon.  A pattern without y-seams was a necessity and Melissa from the Polka Dot Chair shared the perfect tutorial for our needs.

Hexagon Fabrics and a Template

Sue asked her boss what colors they had in mind for their hexagon theme.  After a short discussion, we chose the Stonehedge fabrics shared above.  For a template, I drew a half-hexagon shape in Word, printed it out, and then drew it on a sturdy file folder.  Five-inch strips were cut from each of the fabrics and a rotary cutter was used for the angled sides.  Sue and her co-worker, Rosalie, set about laying out the half-hexagon wedges in a pleasing pattern.  Once stacked into rows, it was my turn to begin the sewing process – here’s a peek at the first three rows.

Hexagon April OMG

For our April OMG project, we will sew the half-hexagon shapes into a quilt top.  We haven’t decided if we will add borders or not – the original inspiration did not have borders.  Starting to quilt this piece once it’s together would be a bonus but it’s not anticipated at this point.  Thanks to Patty for the linky party and the inspiration to set our One Monthly Goal.

Join us each Tuesday for our hosted linky party called To-Do Tuesday.  Our other Linky Parties can be found by clicking the link above or along the sidebar on our website for more quilting fun – check out what our friends are up to.  Like/follow us on our Facebook page and you can share your photos of what you’re working on.  We would love to see them!

Lovely large hexis – Thanks for linking up with Elm Street Quilts One Monthly Goal and good luck with your project.

  3. Great choice and a fun pattern for a baby quilt. I’ll be interested to see your border/no border choice. The problem of course is the binding….its a lot of twists and turns. I did take one that I just “hacked off the edge” so I could bind straight (it was an antique one that I never would have finished otherwise. It is happily on someone’s bed so I am happy with that decisions!

That’s a really interesting way of doing a hexagon pattern and I do hope it works out as you want. And for a new baby – now that is incentive. All the best.

  5. It is hexi time and you are rockin it! The colors look great too:). Maybe more time in the month means more time for fun projects like this one!😊❤️

    Hi Roseanne,
The Stonehenge fabrics are perfect for your half-hexie quilt. It’s going to look great!

Hello Roseanne, I would really love to know your thoughts on piecing this quilt. Like you, I have never really been interested in doing a Hexagon quilt. After seeing your posts and several other posts on very “easy” patterns, I am very tempted. I honestly adore the fabric combination that was chosen. I always look forward to your posts and seeing progress on your quilts and of course any other part of life you wish to share! Stay safe, you and Sue are always in my prayers!

  8. Oh!! This reminds me of how much I would love to make the hexagon quilt in AP&Q recent issue. I love the colours of yours! And also reminds me to set an OMG….

You are doing a wonderful job. Love Stonehenge fabrics and I will watch your progress with the hexies to see if I want to try such a project. Like that you’ve done it with no “Y” seams.

Those fabrics are gorgeous and can I say that this pattern is one of my all time favs?? I have the rulers from MSQC (both for the charms squares and the layer cakes). And I know your FMQ loving brain is already working on a quilting plan. Looking forward to progress updates!

  11. Looking good, you two! Another fun project to keep you out of trouble (haha)!

Love the Stonehenge! But will pass on the hexies. Lol. Not sure if April will be much better, but we all have lots of time to sews. Take care.

  13. I love all things hexie! You could use a solid fabric and cut quarter hexies to finish and begin each row giving the quilt a border on the sides, for top and bottom use the same solid as half hexie! If I’m totally confusing you I can send you picture of quilt I made to give you a visual. The Stonehenge fabrics are really pretty!

Hexie baby is coming along nicely, love those fabric choices. I adore anything with hexie’s!!
