31 Quilt and the VRD Blog Hop
This is such a fun idea for a blog hop. Villa Rosa Designs Fast & More Fun blog hop started yesterday with the launch of five new patterns. Check out the Villa Rosa blog post with all the fun details like the sponsors and giveaways. Today is our day for the hop and it’s the first time we’ve participated in one of their festivities. Running from March 14 through 21, VRD offers all of its designs on a postcard. There’s even a special-priced bundle for all five new designs! Of the five new patterns just released, we chose to make the ’31’ pattern.
Did I mention that there are giveaways from many wonderful sponsors? They include Hoffman, Jaftex, Moda, Banyan Batiks/Northcott, Benartex, Timeless Treasures, Electric Quilt, Fox Chapel/Landauer, Hancocks of Paducah, and C&T Publishing! We extended a big thank you to all the sponsors for their generosity. Be sure to visit all the participants listed below to see their interpretation of each pattern and for additional giveaways. Four Grand Prizes will be awarded: a Kaffe Fassett Precuts Collection, a $100 digital gift certificate for Hancock’s of Paducah, a Big Mystery Box of Quilting Goodies, and a Download of Electric Quilt 8. Be sure to visit our Rafflecopter for entries to win a prize.
31 Tribute
Five patterns are the focus of the Fast & More Fun blog hop, and you’ll see all of them represented in the next few days. Our choice was the pattern named 31. I was intrigued by the name. 31? What could that mean or stand for? I asked sweet Tricia from VRD, who organized this hop. Her quick reply surprised me! Molly, the designer, designed the panel quilt as a tribute to her 31st birthday. As you will see, her homage is quite festive and fun. Now you have the inside scoop on this newly released pattern! It’s time to get busy sharing our version of 31, although that age is definitely in our rearview mirror.
Finding a panel to use was no issue, but I shared a few sneaky peeks to spark some interest. The picture on the right is taken from the panel. It didn’t share too much, did it? Any guesses before you scroll on? The second shot is an in-progress trimming of some HSTs (half-square triangles). One half reflects the background fabric which matches fairly well.
31 Panel Focus
Enough with the games! Let’s focus on this pattern, which uses a panel. What to choose? So many options. Oddly enough, I had just ordered and received this fun panel. It’s perhaps an odd choice for late February and early March but we found it fun. We carry a little Christmas spirit in our hearts all year long.
Next, it was time to dig through our stash to find some fabrics that enhance the panel yet work within the requirements of the pattern. Thankfully, my bestie Sue is very versed in our stash. Having just recently reorganized our sewing room may have helped, too. Even I know which draw contains the white and black fabrics!
31 Border, Background, and Arrows
The first mission was to find a fabric that would work for the first border. It needed to be something to pull a color out of the panel without calling too much attention to itself. I think the forest green with small gold polka dots is a spot-on perfect choice!
Next, Sue was able to find a lovely blue tone-on-tone swirly fabric that matched closely to the panel background. That quickly became one part of the half-square triangle fabrics. The second part is a sparkly white fabric with splashes and dots in a plethora of colors. It’s kind of like sparkling snow, reflecting all the colors of the rainbow. With everything falling together so nicely, it was just a blink of an eye and the whole quilt top was together.
31 Quilting and a Finish
We are so lucky to be able to finish off our projects using Carol’s longarm APQS machine, Millie. Quilting on Millie makes the whole process quick and easy, plus we get to spend quality time laughing and chatting with good friends. We also tried out a new Irish pub near their house since quilting was almost over before we started.
It’s humorous to note that we used our usual go-to pantograph, Loop the Loop. We don’t like to mess with perfection! We also used our usual go-to gray Glide thread which adds an extra sheen while blending in quite nicely.
Here’s our finished 31 quilt after it’s been washed and dried. Now, check out our friends who post their finished projects today. Be sure to check out all the participants during the hop for additional chances to win!

I love it! The green border is perfect and the doing the arrows, now snowflakes, works perfectly with this panel. I have made quite a few: Hillside Charm, 31, Gypsy and Fire & Ice (to be blogged soon).
Your background color makes this quilt so peaceful and calm – like a snowy night waiting for Santa to come.
Beautiful Christmas Quilt! 31 is a great pattern and fabric choices really complements the panel! Whirlybird is a favorite pattern I often make.
