2020 Monthly Color Block Quilt Top Finish
We have been following along with Jen at Patterns By Jen and her Monthly Color Block Challenge. While we’ve had the quilt top finished last year in early December, I completely forgot about sharing a post about it. We will be joining Jen and the gang in 2021, sewing a monthly challenge block as each color is announced.
Monthly Blocks Form Quilt Top
We had fun sewing a new color each month that have formed our quilt top. Here are our blocks in a little slideshow from January to December.
I’m sure you’ve noticed there is a wee bit of a similarity within each of these blocks and that is the black background we chose to use. This is the first time in recent memory that we used black, and it really allows the feature fabrics to shine.
Monthly Blocks Need Sashing
As we neared the end of the year-long challenge, we knew we were going to need a sashing to put these blocks together. Sticking with our usual modus operandi, we knew the sashing had to contain bright colors. Here’s all 12 blocks on the design wall, pre-sashing.
Hmm. How are we going to sash these blocks and let them shine individually at the same time? It’s called Dot Delight . . . which is also fitting because who doesn’t like a good polka dot?!!
A Monthly Layering
It wasn’t long before we had all the blocks sashed and together into a quilt top. We used some of the nearly-solid fabrics as cornerstone pieces.
Of course, we needed a spectacular backing for this special quilt top, don’t you think?! We were able to use one from our stash called Paint Splatter.
This shows a nice closeup of both the front of the quilt with its sashing along with the paint-splattered backing on black. Yowza! This might not be everyone’s cuppa but we like it. Up next is to quilt it and I’m going to take inspiration from our 2019 Color Block quilt. A combination of Heatwave and Aqua Flame was used successfully so I’ll do something similar on this version.
I wonder what color thread to use?!! We want to thank Jen for the fun sew-along and the inspiration for our second quilt! The 2021 Monthly Color Block challenge starts on January 1st if you’d like to play along.

Your colorful quilt reminds me of a block swap I did on a quilt retreat in Amish country. Yours is much prettier. I still need to finish that one. LOL.

That dot sashing really makes your blocks pop! And I love the cornerstones in the monthly colors! I got my first 4 blocks finished yesterday in a virtual retreat with a few other bloggers. We had a great time and got a lot accomplished! I’m looking forward to seeing your quilt all finished. I personally LOVE that backing!!

Oh, I like that sashing fabric, as well as the backing! My blocks are still sitting in a bin, ignored for now. Typical – LOL. Yay for you and the finish!

I love everything about your quilt! I love using black as a background it really makes all other colors stand out — I have some of the same polka dot sashing fabric you used very cute and solid cornerstones was the perfect complement. I can’t remember are you planning to gift this quilt?
