Weeks 5 & 6 Hidden Stars SAL
We are working towards a quilt top with Hidden Stars. Sherry from Powered by Quilting is the hostess for this sew along featuring a pattern she recently released. With postings every other week, the SAL is tentatively scheduled to end mid-March. We’ve set the quilt top completion as a first quarter goal, which may and should be possible.
Week Five of Hidden
February 5th we received the next directions in the sew along. Already behind us was selecting our fabrics along with cutting and labeling. We also made the corner blocks for each square using A and B fabrics. This week we are to make the square-within-a-squares for the A fabrics.
Sherry shared some great tips on the sewing of these blocks. She also shared a video on her Facebook page! Her major suggestion that I took note of was to press the seams open. Ouch! I always burn my fingers when doing that.
Week Six of Hidden
Chain piecing is again recommended for quick stitching the first side of the square. Nothing like zip, zip, zipping those seams together. Sherry then recommends sewing on the opposite side, and then heading to the ironing board for pressing. Repeat for sides three and four. I noticed that Sherry has the same iron as we do, and that she had the steam setting low. That did help with the burning my finger issue I was having when pressing the seams open. Our Group As are in various stages of being trimmed.
Sherry has a Facebook page for sharing updates. Additionally, there is a hashtag on social media of #PBQHiddenStarsSAL if you’d like to check on the progress. This is week seven and today Sherry will have more instructions and tips for us. My guess is for square-within-a-square for the B fabrics. The more I see and work with these fabrics the more I love them! This quilt top is going to be fabulous.

Hi Roseanne, I’m also loving the bright, vibrant colors, and I’m wondering what kind of iron you use? Take care, Mary.
Pretty blocks. I like the bright colors.
Hello Roseanne, These fabric choices are going to make this quilt such a fun filled array of delight. I am one who really loves to press seams open, after far to many tender fingers. I choose to turn off the steam during the first step of opening, and then after all seams are opened, I then turn back on the steam or even just lightly spritz with vinegar water and do a nice press job once again. I have gotten so used to this method that it does not really take but a few minutes extra. Give it a try and see what you think. I am really excited to see this quilt all finished with the beautiful fabrics you have chosen! I hear you are getting those low temps and lots of snow again. Keep warm and safe and know I am thinking about the two of you!
I totally forgot to ask….where are you hiding those Stars? Because I was looking all over your post and I could not find them. So fess up…where are they?
I know, my hubby tells me I am not the funny person I try to be. LOL….I just could not help but give you a bit of a tiny tiny tiny bit of my humor to make your faces light up with smiles!!!
Brenda, I’m really curious about the vinegar water you use to spritz your seams. I assume you add some white vinegar to water (perhaps distilled water). I’m curious about the proportions?
Looking good! The fabrics are great!
The colors are so bright and cheery!!
Looking super Roseanne! Love the rainbow of fabrics you’re using.
That is going to be a fabulous bright eye opening quilt!
Those fabrics you’ve chosen are going to look great with this pattern. You are zipping along!
Love the fabrics! The blocks look fantastic!
You are zipping right along with this one. I love that fabric, it kind of twinkles like stars 🙂
Loving those colors! And may I say from experience that you need thermal fingers?? I know I sound like a Know It All sometimes, but I am speaking from (painful :0{ ) experience! Nancy’s Notions carries them. I never press seams open without them!
