Pieces From the Past Sew-Along – Starts Soon

Today I’m sharing some news about a unique sew-along opportunity from my friend, Melva and her blog Melva Loves Scraps.  If you check out the link, you will see more details about the Kansas City Star quilt patterns that will be featured.  While her actual sew-along may not be unique, certainly, the circumstances behind the scene are.  Melva’s sew-along is entitled Pieces From the Past with a very good reason.

Pieces From the Past – Quilts and Letters

Melva has many letters and Kansas City Star quilt patterns from her Grandmother, Grandma  Schleich.  She will be featuring each pattern and a special letter written to Grandma Schleich from German officers held in Trinidad, CO camp for POWs.  Melva has written to CT Publishing and received permission to share and host this sew-along.  There will be prizes but even more unique and interesting are the letters that will be shared.

Here’s a little hint from Melva!

Pieces Sew-Along Details

The sew-along will start in late January with a pattern block and letter being published once every three weeks.  That is a nicely paced sew-along, don’t you think?  It allows you enough time to keep up as each block is released, with not too much time in between so you forget about it.

Kansas City sneak peek

Another Melva sneak peek block!

With Kansas City Star blocks being highlighted from 1928 to 1961, all lovers of the 1930s reproduction fabrics have the perfect medium for you.  I am one of ‘those people’ who do not enjoy 30s fabrics.  The 20 fat quarters I select for this sampler quilt top will definitely have a modern feel to them.  Sue is actually a fan of the reproduction fabrics, but since I’m doing the sewing and quilting I’m going to overrule her.  Truthfully, the block shown above from Melva could really change my feelings about the reproduction fabrics.  I just love it!

Pieces From the Past – Join In

Would you like to join in with Melva’s sew-along?  I hope you do – certainly the more the merrier.  Check out Melva’s website and/or her Facebook page – she’ll be sharing more details very soon.  Here it is still 2019 and I already have two big SAL/QALs for 2020.  This adventure sounds like fun doesn’t it?!  New fabrics . . . new-to-me blocks . . . new fabrics . . . did I mention pretty fabrics?!!  Time to do a little shopping, I think.

  1. Can’t wait to see your fabrics! I was being good and not taking on too many projects this year. The to be quilted pile is starting to haunt me. 🥴. But Melva’s SAL has me hooked. Haven’t had time to pull fabrics, but it is on my to do list. 😁 Carol

Roseanne – you temptress!! It is a nice pace though…hmm…I may need help picking out my fabrics – I am not a repro fan either!

Thanks for the link. This looks like a great sew-along. Not that I need one, but you know … it’ll be a good way to use up my 30s or my repro fabrics!
    Happy Quilting! 🙂

Hello Roseanne, I am not sure at this time but I did sign up! I definitely want to read these letters about history and depending on what is going on, I will most likely make the blocks also. Help keep me on track…pretty please! Have a fantastic day!!!

  9. This is a very tempting QAL, Roseanne! Thanks for the info on it. I agree, that pink and green block is really pretty – makes it very tempting to join in!

  10. I’m with you, Roseanne, ’30s prints don’t float my boat…mostly cuz they don’t ‘play well with others’ and seem to need to be in their era in order to work…but it will be interesting to see what you guys come up with. The premise of Melva’s project is cool, though especially from an historical perspective.

  11. I might play, what is the other you are doing? I lost track or missed it!

  12. Denise says:

I’m not a fan of reproduction fabrics either. Some are very pretty though. I look forward to seeing what you do.

  13. I am not a 30s fabrics girl, either, but I do love reproduction fabrics in other colors. Looks like a fun QAL, but I’m going to watch from the sidelines. I took on too many this year, so I’m going to restrain myself this coming year. Have fun!

  14. Gretchen says:

Thanks for the info about the sew along. I don’t know if I’m on board yet but it sounds interesting! Happy Stitching!

  15. Jeanne says:

Hi Roseanne, Thanks for the info about the Pieces from the Past sew-along. I have a big collection of 30s fabrics, so I’ll definitely be looking into this!

  16. Hi Roseanne, I’m in the Sue camp — I love 30’s prints. The quilt along sounds like fun especially the letters!
