Our Country Pieces From the Past Block

Melva from Melva Loves Scraps has a sew-along ongoing called Pieces From the Past.  The fifth block called Our Country was just recently released.  Along with blocks from the Kansas City Star sampler, she is also sharing letters sent to her grandparents.  They ran a POW camp during WWII and many prisoners reached out after the war ended.

Our Country Fabrics

Since this block is called “Our Country,” we had to use red, white, and blue.  Fortunately, our fabric bundle included some sweet prints in those colors.  Sue cut the fabrics for me and I set to work.  Sewing HSTs and then trimming them with the Bloc-Loc ruler took very little time.

Our Country Paper Piecing

Also called for in the block are four paper-pieced sections.  Thankfully, my participation in the bee-hive (a group of quilters who make blocks for each other) last year has reminded me how to PP.  It wasn’t long before all four sections were ready to have their paper removed from the wrong side of the blocks.  I moved to the easy chair and a recorded TV program for that project.

Our Country Layout

Once all the paper was removed from the four pieces, it was time to create a layout of all of the fabrics.  This shows the first and last rows already sewn together prior to pressing.

I have learned the hard way to layout and double-check as I sew.  In spite of these proactive measures, I still manage to flip things around occasionally.

Pieces Our Country

Ta-da!  Here is our finished Our Country block which we will be linking up on Melva’s post.  This picture really showcases the print on these fabrics.  All those swirls are just begging for a swirly quilt pattern, don’t you think?
