Olive October Monthly Color Block

Olive is the color for the October block in the 2020 Monthly Color Challenge hosted by Jen at Patterns By Jen.  The inspiration is from the ruby-crowned kinglet bird which is a little guy that is often overlooked.  This block is a combination of many things that appeal to me – star blocks and the color olive.  Whenever we hear the word olive, both Sue and I mentally spell it out – o-l-i-v-e.  Many moons ago we were trying to find Burr Street in Anaheim.  It was pitch dark and we were both trying to read the street name in a dim street-light cast.  Certain it was Burr Street, we turned on Olive.  Yeah, going forward, it became O-l-i-v-e Burr Street.  Thankfully, we did eventually find the real Burr Street somehow.  HAHA!

Back to Olive for October

Olive is an underused color in fabrics, I think.  Maybe we should make a determined effort to bring it further into the mainstream.  It’s a color I enjoy wearing – it’s my favorite go-to summer top.  Here’s a peek at the Crayola Kaleidoscope fabric in olive with the Bella black that we’re using as a background.

Another great look at the orange peel tone-on-tone design that appeals to us so much.

HSTs for the Olive Win

Last month’s block featured flying geese and this month does as well.  Jen suggests using the process that makes four-at-one-time.  The four geese are enough for one star and we needed to make four sets.

It’s an Olive October

Lickety-split and just like that the block was all sewn together.  This is definitely a block we would make into a quilt – oh yeah, we’ve already done that with Evening Star that used a nine-patch in the center.

Oct finished

Lastly, on the design wall is our newly completed olive block with the earlier 2020 monthly ones.  There’s room for just two more!

Looks great. Can you believe you only have two more to go? Where did the time go? As for street signs well, now there is only one at any given intersection and it never close enough to read in the daylight much less at night!
