Mystery Baby Quilt a.k.a. Airplane Quilt
It would seem like we are immersed in mystery lately. We are participating in Grandma’s Kitchen mystery lap size quilt. We are also participating in I Wish You a Merry Christmas quilt-along. This is NOT a mystery other than for the mom-to-be. ~smile~
A little while ago I shared a tutorial called Quick Triangle. We decided we needed to make a quick baby quilt. Andrea’s bestie is pregnant and due just a few days after her. She is expecting a boy, and the theme she chose is antique airplanes. We found blueprints of an airplanes and some coordinating blue fabric that works perfectly.
The pattern calls for three 18″ blocks marked with an “X” and a “+” on the wrong side of one fabric, then sewn 1/4″ from those lines. Once you cut on the drawn lines, you end up with eight half-square triangles (HSTs). You need 24 HSTs to work into a pattern you like. Here are a couple of options we chose between:
Mystery Pattern Choices 1 and 2:
Flying geese and an on-point block were two choices.
Mystery Pattern Choices 3 and 4:
Stripes and pinwheels were a few more that were considered (I was pulling for the pinwheels).
Mystery Pattern Choice 5:
Chevron was Sue’s choice and also the mom-to-be’s choice. I posted a poll on our Facebook page, and it was close . . . but the mom-to-be’s vote pulled rank on all other votes. ~smile~
The quilt went together very quickly. Once the HSTs were trimmed down to their final 8″ size, and we had the layout, it was all together and pressed within a few hours. We found a blue boy-ish backing fabric, layered it up and it was ready for quilting. I decided to mirror the chevron pattern in quilting, which was a first for me. Here’s a shot of the quilting and also the cute backing fabric.
Andrea’s giving this to the mom-to-be so I can share it. I don’t know the baby’s name for sure yet, but I’m calling him Gem. I know he’s going to be a real gem for his big sister and his parents and his initials just may spell GEM. Maybe they’ll let me share a picture of Gem and his quilt sometime soon. ~smile~

Love GEM’s quilt and I am sure he will too. I am with you, I liked the pinwheel design also, but the finished quilt is perfect. Navy is becoming my go to color for now.

There does seem to be a lot of mystery in the air. I am participating in one (and probably two) mysteries starting this weekend. I love that airplane print you were able to find. That makes for one stunning baby quilt. Happy sewing! Andrea
Hi Andrea! Two mystery quilts for you – and both starting at the same time. I guess I am doing two as well, but one is weekly (Pat Sloan’s) and one is every other week. That seems to take the pressure off a bit. I hope the baby loves his little quilt – it was stitched with lots of love just for him. ~smile~ Roseanne
The HSTs are so neat, with perfectly matched points. But the backing is super-adorable. I am sure that the baby will be looking at the cute shapes and bright colors.
