HSTs Table Topper and Table Runner

We recently used the very versatile HSTs to make a gray/taupe table topper and table runner for Sue’s sister, Janice.  We used half-square triangles (HSTs) for an airplane baby quilt, and I think some pinwheels will be in our near future as well.  The HSTs can be used in so many designs, but I digress.  Janice requested both the table runner and topper for their new home.  She also went outside her usual wheelhouse color of blue and asked for gray.  We obliged.

HSTs Table Topper

First we started with the table topper in a zigzag pattern.  I shared all the details with this late last week as it went together so quickly and easily.  I had fun sewing and quilting it on Ellie and our new sewing machine table.

The table runner also went together quickly.  Since it is much more narrow and longer than the topper, it was only natural to change the layout.  It measures approximately 11″ x 48″.  That would allow only one zig – no zag!  That would not work.  So we chose a diamond layout instead.  Here is the table runner on our island:

Here are a couple more close up shots of the runner:

This has just a straight line quilting and we used the same fabric as the backing to tie the two pieces together.  Hopefully the newlyweds will enjoy them.  They were stitched with love.
