Freefall Fall Batik Table Runner Finished

Back in August, we won some beautiful Island Batik Fall-colored fabrics from Quilting Gail.  After recently receiving them in the mail, I asked for ideas for the table runner they were destined to become.  Thanks to the suggestion from another quilt blogger friend, Kathleen, who led me down the squirrel path for this project.  She suggested using the pattern another friend, Sandra from mmm Quilts Sandra held a quilt along in 2017 called Freefall and that gave us the inspiration for this piece.

Freefall Beginning

If you check out Sandra’s pattern/tutorial you’ll quickly see that it isn’t a difficult pattern but it does call for a small bit of paper piecing.  These Island Batiks were just begging for a nice fallish-looking use, and we thought this leaf was just perfect.  Just look at the nice contrast between these lovely fabrics!

We used a different layout than the route Sandra took in her quilt along.  Highlighted below is just one of the secondary patterns that show itself.

Eight leaves were made and the layout was decided.  You can see the corner of a snowflake peeking out in the photo above.  It’s for the Hexagon Snowman Table Topper.

I layered it and got busy quilting it using the same quilt pattern as I used on Alice’s pumpkin quilt.

Freefall Fall Table Runner Complete

This was a really quick project to complete.  Sue gave me a nice brown solid fabric for binding once all the quilting was finished.  We took turns hand sewing the binding during Sunday morning coffee with Sue’s Mom.

One more view of the finished runner.  I think this is the only finish for October and November . . . so far.

Oh, yes, what a perfect collection of fabrics for a fall runner. It makes me think of November, which I love because with most of the leaves on the ground, we can see deep into the woods on road trips or bike rides. Love your use of Sandra’s pattern, too!

  4. It is such a rush when someone uses your pattern, and even more so when they put their own spin on it (ha pun not originally intended!). I love what you did with the blocks, and I just love those rich batiks, lickable indeed. And I mean as in tongue, yum! Thank you for the shout-out. ONE of these days I have to finish up that pattern and get it published already.
