Fiona & Lovey the Llama Finishes

Little baby girl Fiona joined us in September, just a few days earlier than expected.  As soon as we learned of her name we started working on a wall hanging project.  Featuring mint green and peach letters on a pale gray background, appliqué began in earnest.  Black thread was chosen mostly to highlight each letter individually.  Lovey the llama wall hanging was also patiently waiting in the works.  Should we add Fiona’s name lengthwise next to Lovey’s silhouette or not?

Fiona All the Way

Once all the appliquéd letters were complete, it was time to layer and quilt the wall hanging.  Rather than using straight-line quilting, I chose to do a wavy stitch across the name.  You can also see the background fabric (kind of) that was used on both pieces.

The choice was twofold.  First, I thought that straight-line stitching would show that the letters were not exactly straight.  I’m not sure just how straight or crooked they are, but I certainly didn’t want to highlight that.  Secondly, Fiona wanted a different look altogether so wavy won out.

We hung Fiona on the front door – it was nice and sunny but the photo turned out dark??  That shot does highlight the wavy quilting, though!

Lovely Llama Loves Fiona

Lovey is a sweet llama.  I am certain of that even after the serious looks I received while stitching and quilting her.  With Lovey’s long and slim neckline sporting a spiffy salmon-colored scarf, straight-line quilting was required.  I have long said that stitching a straight line is an art and one that I do not possess.

Straight-ish

While quilting this piece I was listening to an old episode of Diagnosis Murder.  It was a particularly compelling episode, the second of a two-part storyline, and I glanced at the TV for one second.  Why didn’t I just stop sewing when I looked away?  So yeah, Lovey has her own wavy lines albeit unintentional ones.  Actually, I corrected myself the next row and now that I’ve shared the whole story, I find it fairly amusing.  Here’s Lovey on the front door as well – still kind of a dark photo.  Sorry!  I just adore the yellow binding around this piece.  It’s a nice, soft flannel leftover from another baby quilt project.

Wall Hanging Mailing

Lovey the llama started out as a squirrel project back in August.  White it was put on-hold then it is all finished now.  Both wall hangings have hang tabs in coordinating colors and will be able to be hung in Fiona’s room any day.  Today, off in the mail they go.

Ooh, Fiona is a lucky baby! These wallhangings are so sweet. Those eyelashes on the llama–I think llama will be Fiona’s favorite animal. I always think of straight lines as organic. That way you can say you meant them to be that way. Yours do look wonderful, though. It is hard to stop for anything once you start a line of quilting. I don’t like to stop even to move my hands, which always lends a more organic quality to the lines.

Both of them are super – what lucky babies your family has. If you didn’t point out the line was wavy, I wouldn’t even have noticed! I did notice you don’t have arrows pointing to all the ones that are just as straight as can be! If you aren’t going to do one, don’t do the other. <3

  3. What a cutie that llama is. I can totally relate to the oops in the straight line stitching. I get distracted while straight lining, so I do the same thing. I just call it straight-ish and tootle on my way. Haha!

  4. The Llama is a cutie and FIONA really turned out very nice! I like the finish the background really makes it stand out!

Been there, done that! But really, if you hadn’t have said anything, I wouldn’t have noticed. She looks great to me!!

Wavy lines or straight lines, meh. They just make it original, individual and filled with love. You ladies are a blessing! What beautiful work!

These are both so cute. Fiona is one lucky little girl. Thank you for linking up to Put your foot down 😉

Oh it is so cute! No one will ever see you slightly missed that straight line if you do not tell them. We are alway way more critical of our own work. I just came back last Thursday from the Pacific International Quilt Festival and believe me some of those prize winner pieces look like wash boards. You did a wonderful job on that cute quilt.

Roseanne these are both too cute. You know me I love straight line quilting, but darn if I don’t look up for a split second and wavy lines appear. I’m doing some straight line today and it sure isn’t perfect, but this on is for me. Using your fabric from your ripple blocks!

Oh my that llama is so cute, I adore her. Both will make very special wall hangings.

Those are so cute. I love wavy line quilting. Oh I share your pain with straight line quilting. Or stitch in the ditch. GASP!

Do not be so hard on yourself, you do such a marvelous quilting job! Be extremely proud of these, they are adorable and will be cherished for years!! Thank you for sharing and have a great day!

This is such a cute llama and wobbly lines happen to all of us. It’s beautiful!

Woot, Woot for finishing two super cute projects. They are sure to make Fiona’s room more adorable than I am sure it already is.

Awww, such a cute llama!! I must have missed a post on where you found this pattern, but it is just adorable. Love the colors you used and I’m sure Fiona will be very pleased!!! Great job, Roseanne!!

  18. Okay, Okay, I confess, I have a wobble section on my PFWHK, too. But, geez, like Quiltinginmyblood said, you don’t point out your wobbles…the eye has a way of blending it into a perfect picture!
    HA!
BTW: I think the color palette is very 21st century…grey is the neutral of choice and it’s a great foil against such an array of color choices.
    Great job, Roseanne!

  19. Shannon says:

So cute! The colors are lovely. Straight lines are hard to achieve on any machine. I think any one could be distracted by Mark Sloane’s sleuthing!

  20. These wall hangings are both so wonderful. Every baby’s room needs a special something with their name (and Fiona is definitely not a common name, so that makes it all the more special). And I just can’t get enough of Lovey the Llama. I don’t remember if you said the pattern you used is one that can be purchased. If so, she might have to go on my ever-growing “Want to Make” list! As far as straight line quilting, the rule is that you don’t point out your wobbles! Have a great day, Mary.

That llama is just adorable! Straight lines aren’t easy but they look nice, so do wavy lines but I think they’re more challenging. Happy Stitching!
