December OMG – Nautical Pillow Shams
I am so happy to report that we have completed our December OMG (one monthly goal). This is the third month we participated, and second successful finish. The goal was to finish the appliqué portion of the shams but instead we got them completed. Yippee! This post is being shared/linked with Patty at Elm Street Quilts December Finish, who hosts this monthly party.
Our good friend, Darlene, asked us to make her a pair of pillow shams with a nautical theme. She sent us a picture of what she was thinking, and gave me the dimensions. Here are the seashell shams she is replacing and the picture she found as her muse:
After we found the perfect shiplap fabric to use as a background fabric, we were off to the races. We were able to draw the nautical objects and cut them out of a navy solid fabric.

Once all the appliqué was finished, I added a frame of nice crisp white Moda. That really set off each picture perfectly, I think. Really quite similar to the original photo.
We used the same format when we laid out all the nautical items. Lastly, we had to decide on what fabric to use on the back of the sham and whether to install a zipper or use a flap. We decided to use the shiplap fabric and the flap method.
Finished Nautical Shams
Here is a peek at one of the shams on Sue’s bed with a chubby pillow stuffed into it:
Here it is sitting nicely on my sewing table and the reverse side – I decided to use the shiplap and a flap but I didn’t photograph the flap. I forgot!
Finally, here is Darlene holding one of the shams, showing us how nicely it goes with her shiplap shelf:
This also shows that fabulous picture in her guest room. Her fiancé and our good friend just passed away earlier this year. He is sitting at the end of the pier, just waiting for her to join him. I sure hope it’s not too soon . . . but I sure do love that thought and this picture. {{Hugs}} ♥

You choose such perfect shapes for the applique. Thanks for linking up with Elm Street Quilts One Monthly Goal and congrats on your finish.
Hi Patty,
Thanks so much for being the hostess with the mostest and for your kind comments. ~smile~ Roseanne
I love your work with these pillows, you sure went to a lot of trouble to get them perfect. And what a beautiful spot they are now sitting in.
Hi Kathryn,
Aww, aren’t you sweet?! I did take a bit of time tracing the outlines so they would match up fairly well. I found that I do enjoy appliqué now that I don’t have to do it all the time. I’m happy they are finished! ~smile~ Roseanne
Pretty! Congrats on meeting your goal!
Hi Vera,
Thanks so much – this is the second month in a row with a finished goal. I kind of like this whole idea, and find it very motivating. ~smile~ Roseanne
Roseanne they are just beautiful! Congratulations on a wonderful finish! Your story brought tears to my eyes though. How sad about your friend. ;( I love the “thought” and the photo of the pier. 🙂
Hi Cindy,
He was one special guy – I can truly picture him sitting on that pier, fishing, just waiting for her . . . we miss him. ~smile~ Roseanne
Roseanne, that is such a great way of imagining it! I will have to remember that. 🙂
Cheers to you for getting the pillows all done! They turned out beautiful:)
Hi Vicki,
Woot woot – I’m happy to have made them and I’m happy with how they turned out as well. Even better that the shiplap matched so well. ~smile~ Roseanne
Beautiful pillows! They came together wonderfully! Congrats on your monthly goal!
Hi Shannon!
You know my next shams are going to be Postcard ones . . . I hope. ~smile~ Roseanne
