April OMG – Have A Ball Quilt

Since all of the thirty balls needed for the Have A Ball quilt for Colt are finished, it’s time to set an April OMG target. It surely would be so nice to have it finished within the next 30 days. Our goal for April is to sew the quilt top and get it layered and ready for quilting. We’ll share this goal at Patty’s linky party on Elm Street Quilts.

Have A Ball Inspiration

It’s fairly easy to find inspiration for any topic on Pinterest, and that’s the first place we went looking. Sue found this comforter in her daily email and thought that with just a few modifications it would be perfect! I had to agree and we started forming a plan.

We liked the look of the alternating balls but we wanted to add golf as it’s one of the sports his daddy likes to play. With five featured sports balls, we decided that six blocks of each, for a total of 30 appliqué blocks would work. Next, we headed to the Fat Quarter Shop for almost all of the fabrics. They had a nifty grass-colored fabric that would be perfect for the background of the football.

Have A Ball Appliqué Begins

Each of the five sport balls have different qualities that make them both my favorite and my least favorite. The laces on the football really make it feel like you could go toss it around in the yard. Conversely, there is a lot of short stints in appliquéing them. I am glad the appliqué is complete prior to sewing them into a quilt top or it would be crazy to manage the fabric with all the twisting and turning.

Isn’t that grass-like fabric just the best?!! We used it on the golf ball as well – of course a golf tee would be in grass!

Have A Ball Layout

Sue and I had fun earlier this week debating and deciding on the layout for the quilt. Our first step was to get all the blocks into the five by six layout and take a picture. We went it off to Colt’s mom for approval and no sooner was that done and we made a swap.

The concentration of the baseballs in the bottom left corner was just too much so we swapped the soccer ball in the bottom right corner. Much better! We carefully condensed each row with a label for my next sewing project. Then it will be on to layering and hopefully some actual quilting, too. This sounds like a very doable goal for April, don’t you think?! We will share this on Patty’s linky party at Elm Street Quilts.
