Hidden Stars Quilt Top Complete – OMG

Hidden Stars is done, Hidden Stars is done!  Woohoo!  Let me repeat, the Hidden Stars quilt is d.o.n.e., as in all quilted and bound.  Woot Woot.  The quilt top Hidden Stars started out as a sew along with Sherry at Powered by Quilting.  In early January Sherry released her pattern and we started sewing along.  By the end of March, we had a quilt top ready to go only to have to await its turn for quilting.

Hidden Stars Opportunities

All the details have been shared in previous posts, like First Quarter Finish A Long Update.  Unfortunately, little ‘ole Hidden had to wait behind some other important finishes.  On the other hand and fortunately, it was nominated as our June OMG project and complete it is.  Quilting briefly caused some pondering but I rallied after trying out a few possibilities on my acrylic board.

Ultimately, I modified the pattern a bit to make it possible to continuously stitch one block without stopping.  I imagine it may have been possible to continuously stitch the whole quilt top without stopping but I didn’t devote enough thought to what that route would be.

Hidden Stars Quilting Choice

I knew that I wanted to highlight those hidden stars just as much as I could.  I started in one of the center stars and outlined the star points.  Once complete, I stitched along in the ditch until I could start the freehand loops.  Those loops alternate directions in each square around the points and center diamond.  In those center diamonds, I continued the loops in a wider pattern to resemble a flower.  I stopped the continuous quilting at this point for each individual star block.

The centers of the diamonds were marked with white chalk or a water-soluble ink to give me a rough idea of where the center of the flower loops should hit.

Hidden Stars Backing

We picked up this snazzy lime green extra-wide backing fabric when we visited my brother and SIL back in April.  It’s one of our favorite shops in Effingham, IL called Wooden Spool Quilt Shop.  We used the same fabric for binding and I think it frames the quilt nicely, don’t you?

The question I asked myself is, does the quilting highlight the Hidden Stars?

The star points have not been quilted and in the picture on the right, they have a nice amount of poof to them.  Overall, I am happy with the texture the quilting has given this quilt top.
