Salem Quilt Guild Panel 2 Complete

When this blog first started, we went on a road trip with our friend, Carol, and picked up a nifty pattern by Crabapple Hill called “Mystery at the Salem Quilt Guild“.  That was in September 2017.  It surely is mysterious why we never started this project earlier but we just recently finished the second panel.

Salem Light Box Time

Time to pull the brand new, ordered in 2020 lightbox out, and put it to use again.  Here I had my doubts that we’d ever use it again.  It is amazing – it weighs less than a feather, lights up the WHOLE screen, and has a variable light setting.  Binder clips work great for holding the paper and fabric steady while tracing.

Salem Steps and Progress

Several steps have occurred back in February before any embroidery stitches can even begin:

• trace the pattern onto the fabric piece 45″ x 15″ (use a Pigma fine-point pen)
• color in the outlines with a fairly heavy hand
• iron/blot of the crayon area using an absorbent paper toweling
• attach a muslin backing which has been washed and ironed. Sew with a long basting stitch which you can see in the photo below in a pretty lilac thread

Sue really enjoys the embroidery phase and has been working on it diligently.  Most evenings she spends about 30 minutes relaxing and hand stitching.

Salem Panel 2 Stitching Complete

Just this weekend Sue finished the second of four panels in this project.  It is wide and difficult to photograph well, but we gave it a try.

Here are two halves of our two panels that have been stitched. Boy, they need to be ironed and better lighting.

Finally, my favorite portion of this second panel called the “Un-Sewing Spells.”  I think I may have had an “un-sewing spell” placed upon me lately . . .  It certainly sounds like a useful skill if one were a new witch.

Soon, we will start the tracing, coloring, blotting, and stitching process on the third panel.  Thank you to Carol for bringing over the final two patterns needed to complete this huge project.
