Red Postage Stamp Pieces

Do you know Sandy at Gray Barn Designs?  She blogs with her sister, Cindy, and I ‘met’ both of them back in the day of the New Quilt Blogger blog hop we all participated in.  They are both really nice and often have some really cute, free patterns.  Sandy recently started a new project using just 1.5″ postage-stamp-sized pieces of red fabrics.  Not just any project but a QUEEN-size quilt project.

The Red Innocent Beginning

The whole project began innocently enough – Sandy had a bunch of 1.5″ pieces and thought she needed to make something with them.  She went through her stash and cut up all the red fabrics into the appropriate size.  She had enough for ONE row of the 19 rows she needs.  Houston, we have a problem.

Sandy’s photo – math time!

Sandy determined that she needs 3,540 stamp-sized pieces for this quilt; however, she only had 1,250 on hand.

Sister and Friends to the Aid

What’s a good sister to do?  Start cutting and send a ziplock baggie filled with 1.5″ red squares.  What else?!  Of course, I raised my hand as well and so did Karla, and Wendy, and Chela . . .  Isn’t that just SO cool??

Red postage

Saturday afternoon I started cutting up some red teeny, tiny squares.  I am now 100% that Sandy is nuts . . . but in a good, healthy quilty way that we all get ourselves into once and a while.  A little more less cutting ensued on Sunday (the littles came over!) and then all of the bitty bits are going in the mail on Monday.  I cannot wait to see the red beauty in all its postage stamp glory when Sandy gets it complete.

Isn’t it nice when we gift our leftovers to some one who needs them. It is guilt free because I do feel guilty when I throw away those small pieces because I know I’ll never use them!! Great job to all.

Hello Roseanne, You and the other quilters who also sent their cut red squares are such fantastic quilting friends! I followed the link you shared, which I always appreciate and check out, and read how much she appreciates everything you all have done for her! Plus, as I always do when I follow a link…I poke around and see what another quilters blog is all about. I sure hope you have a marvelous day!

I for one am looking forward to seeing this quilt because NEVER would I be caught doing something that tiny! I don’t have the patience. And wouldn’t it be funny if she ended up with enough teeny tiny gifted squares to make two?

How fun! and how generous you are! It’ll be fun to see Sandy’s final quilt! And fun for you to see if you can pick out your fabrics … however, that might be impossible, unless you see the quilt in person!
    Happy Quilting! 🙂

  7. I love this! I’m with you guys in spirit if not on the cutting board!!!!

  8. I think, as quilters, we sometimes don’t ask enough, so I’m glad Sandy reached out. It was very soothing to search and cut my little stash for her. I can’t imagine cutting over 3000 of these little gems though. As we say in Minnesota – UFFDA! Yay for you sharing some of your red stash too!

  9. What a great friend to help one in need! I sometimes feel that curbs any need to join in on a project of that size….it will be fun to see it!

  10. That is just too sweet and how lucky she is to have such wonderful quilting friends! Hugs

Roseanne and Sue to the rescue! Sandy is definitely going to be seeing red when this is done (but in a good way). I the only thing that could make this post any better is if you tell me you mailed it using an actual red postage stamp 🙂 I love how the quilty world jumps quickly to help a sewing brother or sister in need <3
