Wonky Wonk Quilt Finished as September OMG

For our September one monthly goal (OMG) project we chose to quilt and finish our Wonky Wonk quilt. This quilt was made on a whim after seeing Jayne’s version on her website, Twiggy and Opal. In all of its polka-dotted glory, it spoke to me and called me to make a version of this quilt for ourselves. Jayne also shared a tutorial on how to make the wonky block but I didn’t follow her example exactly. Instead, I just added some tape to my ruler to remind me of the boundaries or parameters needed for sizing the block.

You can find all the details that we shared last month on exactly how this Wonky Wonk quilt top came together for us, but I’ll share just a few of the finer points. First of all, the block design calls for a charm pack of which we have a plethora. Choosing just one was the hard part but ABC Animals was the clear winner.

This is a third-quarter goal so that meant that quilting had to be completed by the end of this month. The usual dilemma about how to actually quilt this piece raised its head but was quickly squashed. Why not use a wonky wavy quilting line that can be accomplished with a walking foot, I asked myself. I searched on Pinterest a bit and found an “organic wavy” quilting design, whatever that means. Organic quilting design?

Wonky Wonk Wavy Quilting

My ‘organic’ wavy quilting looks a bit different from the example I shared above. First of all, I did a lot of crossing lines because I like the way that looked. I’ve found that I am not very random or wonky when quilting. No surprise there since I like order and straight lines! At first, I thought this quilt would look good having wonky quilting in both directions but decided against it. It seemed that would give it a plaid-ish look and I was happy with the single direction quilting.

The walking foot does all the work in this design so there were no wrinkles created on the back. I did start in the center and work out in each direction. That may not have been necessary but it also eliminated the bulk in the throat of the sewing machine.

Here is our completely finished Wonky Wonk quilt. Thanks definitely go to Jayne for inspiring us to make this quilt in the first place. While it doesn’t yet have a home, we sewed in extra love and care for the eventual recipient.

We used a dark aqua for the binding and the backing is a multi-colored swirly fabric. Thank you also to Patty and her monthly OMG linky party! Another successful monthly project complete. This is also a third-quarter finish as well.
