Tutorial – Tabby Mountain Quilt by Tula Pink

Today I am sharing with you a tutorial called Tabby Mountain by Tula Pink.  It features Tabby Road fabrics, and the quilt was quilted by Angela Walters.  I just love Angela’s show on YouTube!  I found a few other examples of this quilt on the Pink Door Fabrics website, so I used a few of their photos for this tutorial.  First, let’s take a look at Tabby Mountain using Tabby Road fabrics:

Tabby Mountain

This just screams Tula Pink, I think.  Don’t you??  A paper template is given in the instruction link shared above, but you could also use a 30 degree ruler.

Tabby Mountain Ingredients:

  • Fat quarter bundle of Tabby Road or 24 fat quarters in prints (10″ x 18″ size needed)
  • 8 – 1/3 yard cuts of solid fabrics
  • 2 yards 108″ backing fabric
  • 5/8 yard binding fabric
  • 68″ x 88″ batting

The first step from the solid fabric you will be cutting 11 full triangles and two half-triangles.  Second and using the 24 prints, you will need to cut only four triangles.  You can see in the photo above, each row has a different solid fabric color.  The solid triangles are alternated with a print.  Since 24 prints are used it is easy to not duplicate any in a row or to pair with a complimentary color.

Here is another example of the quilt.  You may consider this a Christmas quilt but if you look closely at the prints chosen, none are limited to the holiday.  I love the different plaids, stripes, and low volume prints used.  Each row does not have the same ‘solid’ print used across it either.  There is also a Halloween version photo that I didn’t share but you can easily find if you are interested.

This seems like a very versatile quilt pattern.  The finished size is approximately 60″ x 80″.  That makes a very generous cuddling quilt.  This just might be a good choice for us when someone asks us to make a quilt for them.  It’s not too difficult yet you can certainly be very creative through your selection of fabrics.  What do you think?

I enjoy watching Angela Walters too but oh, if only quilting was so easy. What a fun quilt.

      Hi Kathryn,
I know she and others make it look easy. We just need to practice, and build our confidence. That’s my theory anyway and I’m sticking with it. Also, I don’t think anyone else is a critical as ourself. ~smile~ Roseanne

  2. Roseanne, Love the bright colors as well as the pattern! It would be a great pattern to use for a customer. I hope someone asks you to make it so that I can watch! 🙂

  4. I have loved this quilt ever since Tula had it at market. Thanks for bringing it up again. I would love to make one or two.

      Hi Nancy,
I think it is a fabulous quilt and one that is so versatile to really show off the fabric if you want. I have this on my to-do list, too. ~smile~ Roseanne
