Tutorial – Sail Away Baby Quilt

I’m in a thinking-of-summer mood, and this little sail boat baby quilt shouts it out.  Don’t you think?  This is from 2014 by Riley Blake called Sail Away.  We have made a few quilts that incorporate sail boats from time to time.  This one is different in that it uses the same fabric for the sails as well as the boat itself.

Sail Away

The blocks are a cute little 6″ x 6″ and the quilt itself finishes at 38″ x 42″.  The fabric choices for the waves underneath each boat look very much like water.  Also, the quilting helps with the wave movement too.  Can’t you just see the swells of the water in those quilting swirls?!

Sail Away Ingredients

  • 1 – 2.5-inch jelly roll
  • 7/8 yard border fabric
  • ¾ yard white
  • Binding 5/8 yard
  • Backing 1-1/3 yards

You will only need 15 strips from the jelly roll so this might be a better project from scraps or stash.  Since you will need only (3) 2.5″ squares and (1) rectangle 2″ x 3.5″ from the print fabric for each boat, not even half of the strip would be used.  That is another reason that it might be better to not waste a whole jelly roll.

Most noteworthy, you will see in the block above that six HSTs are needed along with four rectangles – one in the print, two in white, and a longer one in the water color.  I thought this might be a great use for the leftovers from our Regatta quilt sew along!  We still have quite a few strips left, although we did use some in a doll quilt.  I think this would be a fun baby quilt to make and add to our go-to patterns.  How about you?  What do you think?

  1. Roseanne, this is a great summer quilt. I can visualize you making this for Mr. Dominic. 🙂 It reminds me of the nautical pillows you made not to long ago. The quilting definitely reflects the motion of an ocean. Great choice! 🙂

What a cute quilt! And I love your advise to use scraps instead of a jelly roll. However, it might be a great project for those left-over jelly roll strips that are hanging around in my stash! 🙂 Then I could make 2 matching sail boats … oh sheesh … I am NOT starting another project – no matter how cute! 😉 Besides, I can always come back and look up the tutorial – right? 🙂

  5. My mom used to make a version of this sailboat block for baby boy quilts. It always reminds me of her. I agree that it would be a cute scrap quilt! Thanks for sharing!

Sounds like a great way to use up fabric left over from a project.
