Tutorial – Hunter’s Star Quilt and HSTs

It is time for another tutorial share with a free pattern.  This time, I chose a pattern from Missouri Star Quilt Company (MSQC) called Hunter’s Star.   This link opens to some information about the quilt pattern as well as a link to their video.  I love MSQC and we hope to visit them in Hamilton, MO sometime.  Sooner than later!  This pattern uses HSTs (half-square triangles).

Isn’t this a pretty quilt?  Jenny Doan suggests using two 10″ layer cake bundles – one solid and one patterned.  The first thing she does is cut them into 5″ blocks.  It might just be easier to start with charm packs that are already 5″ blocks.  Just saying.  Once you have the 5″ blocks, what do you do with them?

Make HSTs!

You make half-square triangles!  My new favorite block!  These two blocks coupled with some four-patch blocks comprise the entire quilt.  The layout is the KEY to making the jagged outline of the actual hunter’s star, or arrow.

I was inspired to share a tutorial for this quilt because a new blogger friend of mine, Cherie of Cherie’s Quilting Journey is making one for her in-laws for Christmas.  Cherie is a new quilter and is doing a lovely job on her quilt, in reds and low-value prints.  If you look at the picture of MSQC’s quilt you can see the arrow in white, while Cherie’s arrows are red.  Both are just beautiful!

Jenny shares a tip of making the HSTs by placing the two 5″ blocks right-side together and then sewing 1/4″ all around the square.  That block is then cut diagonally from each corner to make the four HSTs for each small block, as shown above.  I love making the half-square triangles this way!  The triangles are then trimmed down to 2.75″.

If you have any suggestions or tutorials you would like me to find/share, just let me know in the comments.  Chances are if you want to see something special, so do I and our readers. ~smile~

  1. Missouri Star has the neatest ideas for shortcuts. I subscribe to their Block magazine and find myself so intrigued by their techniques. I hope to visit their storefront sometime in 2018. 😊

      Hi Cindy,
Me too as far as visiting MSQC. They have 12 – TWELVE – storefronts. Can you imagine?! I need to start saving now. I agree about their tutorials, too. Jenny is just great and she makes everything look so easy and doable. ~smile~ Roseanne

Will you be making one? I am hand sewing the binding this week. It should be finished soon. Woo Hoo! Jenny certainly made a difficult looking quilt easy.

      Hi Cherie,
I really want to make one but it’s not decided yet. I think it is beautiful! I look forward to seeing yours all complete. ~smile~ Roseanne

  3. I enjoy hearing of your quilting adventures… partly because of your own enjoyment of having the stash… cutting.. stitching… and the road trips .. having your own shop hops… The HST tip sounds good… thanks…

      Hi Maxine,
You just made my day! I do get a lot of enjoyment out of quilting. Something about cutting apart fabric and sewing it back together – that sounds crazy to start with – is very calming for me. And there’s always something new to learn. Thank you so much for your nice comment – I appreciate it very much. ~smile~ Roseanne
