Tutorial – Grayscale or Multi-color Quilt

Happy Happy Birthday, Andrea!  Just a little shout out to Dominic’s mom. ~smile~

Today’s tutorial is originally from Allison from Cluck, Cluck, Sew called Grayscale.  Beautiful quilt with gradient colors ranging from very light to very dark gray.  Another take on this same quilt is this multi-colored version, which is NOT grayscale, from Las Vegas Modern Quilt Guild.  I meant to share this with you earlier because they are collecting blocks for the survivors of the LV shooting rampage.  The second link will provide you with more information if you would like to share blocks, quilt tops, supplies or anything else that might be helpful.  It may not be too late.

Grayscale vs. Multicolor:

Allison shares the block tutorial on her link.  Her quilt top finishes off at 60″ x 70″ with a 10″ block, but it would be SO easy to make this whatever size you need.  Right?!  Allison used a jelly roll but again it is so easy to cut 2.5″ strips.  Only two block comprise the quilt – block A and a mirror image, block B.  21 dark and 21 light blocks comprise the whole quilt, and the blocks resemble half a log cabin design if you are familiar with them.

Here is a close up of Allison’s blocks and choice of fabrics.  You can see they did include prints of a smaller size and a gradient of grays from light to dark.  I have seen several jelly rolls that offer this type of color range within the one strip set.  If that doesn’t strike your fancy, then the multicolored one may.  As you can see from the picture below, this quilt uses only block A as they have no dark center square.

Not Grayscale

Have I sparked your interest in this quilt?  If so, I would love to hear about it, and what your plan is for it.  We have never made a grayscale quilt, but perhaps we need to add one to our list.

Just by changing the color they become so very different quilts. The gray looks very modern, very chic and belongs in an upscale house where it is there to add to the décor. The bright colorful quilt is the one that will be the comforting, cuddly one. Just my opinion.

      Hi Preeti,
I totally agree with your opinion. I can picture that upscale house, totally modern and chic. I appreciate you visit and comment so much. ~smile~ Roseanne

  2. I think either version is beautiful! 🙂

      Hi Cindy,
I agree except I like the two different blocks in the actual grayscale. I guess the multicolored one would have looked completely different if it had used both blocks. ~smile~ Roseanne
