Tutorial – A Snowball ‘s Chance Quilt

This is a fun tutorial we are sharing with you today.  You’ll find a different take on the traditional snowball block in A Snowball’s Chance quilt.  This quilt was designed by Barbara Esposito (on Instagram @thequiltedb) for the Moda Bake Shop back in 2017.  All of these pictures are from Barbara’s tutorial.

Snowball Chance

It doesn’t even look like a snowball block, does it?!!

The Ingredients

You will need the following for this quilt:

  • 2-1/2 yards solid (Barbara used eggshell in this example)
  • 1 layer cake (we have a few of these sitting around!)
  • 1/2 yard – for binding

Three inch squares are needed from the solid/eggshell fabric.  By my math, you will need about 13 width-of-fabric strips for these.  Next, you snowball all four corners of the layer cake squares.  Barbara shares exact directions on how to snowball the corners by sewing diagonally across each square.  You might consider sewing an extra seam before you trim the corners as you would have some bonus HSTs for another project.  I think this would be the perfect time for me to use my laser light instead of marking the diagonal lines:

The Fun Secret Trick

Press those snowball corners however you like – to the dark side or open.  Barbara suggests not using steam as that may distort the block.  I didn’t know that – and that darn ‘new’ iron we have always steams my fingers.  Ouch!  Now for the difference with these little snowball blocks – cut them in half!!

Isn’t that just so slick?  You will lay these new snowball blocks into seven rows of six blocks.  Next you will insert some sashing strips between each row, and as a border around the entire quilt.  A new look on the snowball quilt!  The quilt finishes at approximately 62″ x 80″.

We have a more than one layer cake gathering a little dust in our fabric stash.  Perhaps we should give this different snowball quilt a go.  How about you – have you ever made one or have I sparked an interest in doing so?  If you do make one, not only would we love to see it but Barbara shares her Instagram information at the bottom of her tutorial.  I am 100% sure she would also love to see it, as I asked her!

This is one of the quilts I am considering for another low-pressure sew along later this year.  What do you think?  Would you like to make a version of this for yourself?  It sure sounds easy enough to me . . . and I love it.  I’ll ask y’all later to share you opinion in a vote post.  Woot woot, like a real democracy or something.
