Tips-Tutorials for 22nd Linky Party

A good friend is having a linky party today featuring tips and tutorials.  Kathleen calls the party Tips and Tutorials on the 22ndShe announced this party theme back in December and I knew we were going to participate.  No doubt.  Now it is time to share a tip or two, and my mind is a total blank.  I don’t have any tips or tricks – I know nothing.  Nada.  Then I paused for a minute, told myself to think about it knowing I work much better under pressure.  Needing a post in a few hours is apparently enough pressure because I finally thought of something.  Oh, and the littles came over for a bit and cleared my mind. ~smile~

The quilting community overall is supportive, helpful and giving.  Anytime I’ve seen someone ask for assistance, guidance or a suggestion, I’ve also seen intuitive and respectful responses.  I expect this linky party to be no different with loads of great tips shared along with not-to-be-missed tutorials.

How about a tutorial using some cute little red hearts for a quickly approaching, seasonally-appropriate Checkerboard mug rug?

Or another insanely easy tutorial for microwave bowl cozies?  We have made over 50 in recent memory and you can make some, too.

Two Quick Tips to Share

Sharing tips aren’t really in my wheelhouse as I feel what I know, most others know as well.  You don’t know what you don’t know!  So, here’s two tips for you – don’t roll your eyes or get an attitude when you already know these:

  1. You don’t need a special ruler to cut triangles of any size – 30°, 45°, or 60°.
60-degree ruler

Line the edge of your fabric strip on the degree marking on any ruler

Cut fabric strips to the size triangles you need, like 9-inches tall.  Then line the degree marker on the ruler with the edge of the fabric.  Cut in one direction and then align the ruler on the opposite fabric edge.  You will see the triangle shape form when your ruler is aligned correctly.

Second triangle cut – you can see the shape appear

2.  This next tip was shared by Carole at From My Carolina Home recently, and you may see her share her post as well.  It literally was a total and complete AHA moment for me, and yet it also qualified as a DUH moment as well.  We’re talking about the quarter-inch ruler.

The ruler itself touts its use for . . . I’m not exactly sure for what purpose, actually.  Our friend, Mary, suggested a quarter-inch ruler when I first started paper piecing.  I didn’t understand the need at first but quickly saw the light.  Carole just shared another amazing use for this skinny little bit of a ruler.  Ready??  **You can also use it for marking the sewing lines for half-square triangles.**  Match the center line on each corner and lightly draw your stitching lines.  Ahhhhhh – can you hear the choir singing for the aha moment for me?!  Brilliant!

Share Your Tips and Tutorials

This is a monthly linky party that holds get promise for learning and sharing.  There may be some projects shared under the guise of tutorials that end up on our to-do list!  Kathleen came up with a nifty hashtag for her linky party #TTot22 so Instagram will gather all the goodness in one spot for all of us.

One last thing – the Winter Blues Blog hop continues all week.  Check out our project Called Something and access the links for the other participants!

Join us each Tuesday for our hosted linky party called To-Do Tuesday.  Our other Linky Parties can be found by clicking the link above or along the sidebar on our website for more quilting fun – check out what our friends are up to.  Like/follow us on our Facebook page and you can share your photos of what you’re working on.  We would love to see them!

Good tips, I have only used my 1/4 for marking HSTs. Didn’t know it had any other use!!!!!

Yes, they do suggest that quarter inch ruler for paper piecing. I know I would get one if I did more paper piecing.

  6. Love the idea of using the quarter inch ruler to mark stitching lines for HSTs and I used diagonal lines once on a quilting ruler to cut diamonds but will have to try with equilateral triangles. Great tips!

Life is much better with a quarter inch ruler…that I know! I also have that skinny ruler but rarely use it! I’m not sure why I don’t. Thanks for the reminder about it though, maybe I’ll try one more time!
