This and That – Did You Want to Know?

Just a little bit of this and that today – sort of random!

Did you . . .

  • get your flu shot?  I got my flu shot Monday after work at Walgreen’s.  Each year, my school district has shots available at each school location.  They are holding them this year, but on a date that wasn’t convenient for me.  I’ll be going to a conference in the Wisconsin Dells.  Prior to that attendance, I wanted to time my flu shot to have maximum protection.  The last time I attended a conference without a flu shot, I contacted the H1N1 virus.  That virus kicked my butt, and I do not care to have a repeat performance.  I encourage all of my friends to get a flu shot if you can.

  • know that semi-truck drivers have specific, approved routes.  I used to make shipping arrangements for CNH (Case New Holland) tractors.  Not just tractors, but many different types of farming implements.  During that one-year tenure, I learned a lot about the different types of trailer truck beds and worked with a variety of contracted rate shipping firms.   One especially large, heavy, and tall combine was damaged on its way to the shipyard.  Set to sail to Greece, it struck a viaduct and was damaged.  (continued)

CNH Combine

  • (continued from above!)  Shortly thereafter, I learned that there is a company devoted to setting and approving routes for tractor-trailer/semi-truck drivers across the United States.  It tracks road construction, weather and even small details like the various height discrepancies between the roadway and bridge in different lanes.  In this case, the driver was approved to drive in the second/middle lane for sufficient clearance needed for this tall combine.  Instead, the driver was driving in the rightmost lane.  Hence, the aforementioned damage which was assumed by the driver’s company.  The next time you see a truck driving in the ‘wrong’ lane, it might be because his approved route calls for it.

  • know I finished my charity blocks?  I neglected to share photos of the finished pieces before I sent them on their merry way.  I shared a post about the charities, Two Worthy Block Drives Needing Help.  The first two blocks are for Covered in Love in Texas.

CiL blocks

The second photo is for the Wisconsin branch of the national “Quilts of Valor” collection.  Since this collection is ongoing through most of next year, my plan is to make a few more.  We picked up some Wisconsin fabric in red on the state blog hop sometime this summer, and that might be perfect for this cause as well.  It has the word “Home” along with the shape of the state as a symbol.  What do you think?  It’s very similar to the “Vote” red fabric we chose this time.

  • want a few details about how I managed to sew the CiL blocks without mixing up the pieces?  After trimming the blocks with the Blok-Loc ruler, I chain pieced them. I kept the three rows together at.all.times without clipping the rows apart even for ironing.  Otherwise, I would have certainly mixed up the HST positions.
  • know that we’re heading to the casino for a day of fun?  Our friends from the last Thursday’s Love post are dragging carting happily taking us to the casino for the day.  Ken and I have October birthdays and we both would like to celebrate with fabulous (a.k.a. BIG) wins.  Truthfully, breaking even would thrill me to pieces.  There will be loads and loads of laughs, plus a Culver’s visit to use up a gift card I received for Christmas last year from them.  I saved it for our next casino visit, and now’s the time to spend it.  Woot woot!

I need to find some of that Wisconsin fabric! It is where I was born and raised!

  2. Your Covered in Love blocks are great. I’m planning to make two this coming week. Hope you have fun at the casino!

Thanks for sharing about truck drivers and designated lanes! I had no idea! Have a wonderful time at the casino, Roseanne! 🙂

I was interested to learn about the trucks! We drove from Los Angeles to Boston and back this summer — would have been interesting to observe the approved lane variations. I mailed my CiL blocks yesterday 🙂

  5. I didn’t know about designated lanes for trucks, but it makes sense. My brother and his crew haul corn and soybeans after the harvest, so I can appreciate what a difficult job it would be.

Hello Roseanne, I shared with my Husband the information you shared about the trucks and the driving information. We both found it very fascinating and had a really great conversation about it. Thanks for sharing this bit of information. Both sets of your donation blocks are great and I really enjoyed reading your method of sewing the CIL Blocks together worked so well for you. I will have to give it a try the next time I am doing a set of blocks with this type of set up. I love to go to the Casino with my Mom every once in awhile, especially when we play Bingo! I very seldom win anything at all and end up following my Mom around and playing with her after Bingo is over until she decides it is time to go home. LOL. She always wins!!! So have a great time and definitely win and win big!! Tell us all the details when you want! Have a superb day!

Happy Birthday and best wishes for that BIG win. Enjoy yourselves. When a truck hits one of the bridges. The overpass (and sometimes the underpass) have to be closed down until inspections occur and repairs, if needed, are made. l tried to get my flu shot this week….the pharmacy was out of the serum. Come back in 2 weeks. Will try another pharmacy.

  8. Roseanne:
I like ‘state specific’ type of fabrics – always clever designs and fun. WI is a hard one, but doable.
BTW: If you decide on a Culver’s frozen custard, think of me as you swoon!
    HA!
For the record…Freddie’s frozen custard chocolate shake is better and Caliche’s in Las Cruces,NM ‘straw-anna frozen custard sundae’ (local in hubby’s hometown) is the 100% best – but Culver’s is more readily available throughout the country.

That’s **my** “this&that you didn’t want to know,” eh?
    😀

Wishing you lots of luck but even more, lots of fun and love today!

  10. Enjoy your day. Will be waiting to hear about your big winnings!

  11. That is a big OUCH! I like the QOV blocks fabrics! Have fun at the Casino! I wish I could take the flu shot – cannot. I got the flu 2 years ago. Last year we just stayed home and ordered groceries for pick up or now Walmart delivers to the house! After all the trips to SA the last 2 months, I will be ready to stay home until Spring! Enjoy and win a lot!

I will be getting my flu shot a little later this month. Be sure to win lots of money at the casino! What is your favorite thing to do there?

  13. I got my flu shot this week, too! Nice to have that done. Enjoy your day at the casino, Roseanne!
