Sew Along – Care to Join In?
A few days ago I shared a post about a tutorial for a lap sized (57″ x 74″) quilt called Regatta by Block M Quilts. It is a simple pattern, yet the fabric choices and the quilting combine to be really attractive. Here is the link to the pattern, at the end of the page. My friend and fellow blogger, Peggy Cooper of Peggy and Sami fame, said she really liked this quilt as well. We decided we would both follow this pattern and make a Regatta quilt, just for the fun of it. No pressure, no real deadline, no prize for being the first one finished or the most liked, no sponsors, nada. Just a plain ole fun sew along. ~smile~
Here’s a shot of Regatta in all its pretty goodness. I love the simple solid colors that remind me so much of the sea/ocean. The quilting really enhances the design, and I especially like the secondary pattern the little white blocks form. I have to share one more closeup photo, just in case you don’t see the quilty wonderfulness:
If the blues and greens don’t speak to you, how about a rainbow in primary or pastel colors? One solid color like navy or red would be great; depression fabrics would look nice as would earth tones with a nice beige background. The possibilities are endless, obviously. The fabric requirements aren’t overwhelming either: 38 jelly roll strips in 19 colors plus your background fabric. FYI – fat quarters wouldn’t really work without adding a seam or two because you need the full width of fabric in the two strips, so keep that in mind.
Sew Along Details:
So, would you like to join us? I thought we might start January 1, 2018, but I suspect we could be talked into a different start date. I have already been looking for a color palate that is just perfect for us . . . even though the holidays are quickly approaching and there may be other things to worry about. Maybe just one or two. But planning the next project or several project is one of the best parts or quilting, right? If you join it, it will be fun. If you don’t, you’ll still hear about it here eventually. If you have to read about it, you may as well join in. ~smile~ Leave a comment if you would like to join us!
Our Linky Parties page shows our quilting friends’ websites – see what they’re up to. Like/follow us on our Facebook page to share your ideas/pictures for this sew along. Thank you!
I would love to try to do this! I love the modern simplicity of the design and the relaxed approach to the quilt-a-long. THANKS
Hi Toni!
That is fabulous! I hope to publish an update next week, and I will add your name to the list of participates. I look forward to seeing what fabrics you choose and how you interpret this pattern. ~smile~ Roseanne

That is great – I will add you to the list of participants right away. Thanks for joining us – I can’t wait to see what colors and fabrics you choose. ~smile~ Roseanne
This is really tempting Roseanne ! I will give it some serious thought. January doesn’t really suit me but since the timeline is so open I may be able to start a little later. It looks like fun!
Hi Sue,
It would be nice if you can join us! No pressure though . . . ~smile~ Roseanne
Oh my Goodness, how cool is that! I would have never expected that people would want a Sew-Along with my Regatta Quilt. You make me a very happy girl! I actually made another Regatta quilt here: http://www.blockmquilts.com/2017/01/regatta-quilt-revisited.html in autumn colours. Just in case people need another colour inspiration. I am super excited and would love to see everyone’s quilt! If you have any questions in regards to the pattern please get in touch!
Daniela,
I will be thrilled to share your newest quilt with our sew-along members (and others) so they can see all the quilty goodness in another color palate. I hope you stop by again, and thank you for your lovely comments. ~smile~ Roseanne
I am looking forward to it. I am interested to see all the color combinations people come up with.
Hi Pam!
Me, too!! I’ll bet they will really be a wide range and some will surprise the heck out of us. HAHA At least I hope so! ~smile~ Roseanne
This looks like a wonderful quilt to make, I would like to join in. Thanks

Hi Christine,
I apologize for not responding sooner! Your message went into spam for some reason. I hope you are able to join in. No pressure and you end up with a nice result that isn’t too difficult. ~smile~ Roseanne
I’ve been wanting to make a regatta quilt for a while now. I think I’m in!
Hi Kelly!
Well 2018 is your year, and mine too! I can’t wait to see your color palate. Thanks so much for joining us! ~smile~ Roseanne
I do believe I might join in! I just happen to have a junior green batik and a junior blue batik that would probably work well with this pattern – and a gift certificate to go buy some white! January sounds great to me! I posted this on QuiltBOM on wordpress, too.
Well aren’t you the sweetest person?! I think blue and green batiks would be stunning in this pattern. And a gift certificate to buy white?! This project is practically free for you – or a stash buster anyway. Thank you so much for joining us! ~smile~ Roseanne
I love this quilt just as it is. I have a blues jelly roll and may need to to the exact quilt. My list of January starts is growing!
That is just great! You know what? I’m leaning toward the blues, too. We might be twinnies – I love the quilt in these colors, and I’m not usually drawn to blue. But it is gorgeous! I’m glad you’re joining us. ~smile~ Roseanne
This is an awesome modern design! Love it!
Hi Kat,
I hope you might consider joining us. Thanks for visiting our blog today and commenting – I appreciate it very much! ~smile~ Roseanne
Count me in! I’ll start thinking about the fabric–so many choices. Thanks of hosting this fun QAL.
Hi Rose!
Oh goodie! There’s really not much hosting involved . . . so far, at least. I am looking forward to seeing what everyone comes up with. ~smile~ Roseanne
I’m in too!!
Yippee! We will all such a pretty quilt by the end – whenever that is?! HAHA ~smile~ Roseanne
Jan – I just realized this is YOU! LOL – I kept thinking I know Cocoa Quilts somehow . . . and finally figured it out. ~smile~ Roseanne
Sounds like fun….now to search my stash for the fabric!
Hi Caryl,
Ooh, a stash quilt sound fabulous. I wonder what color palate you will use! It will be so fun to see them all. Thanks for joining us. ~smile~ Roseanne
Hi Roseanne. Sami and I have ordered some fabric (we only have a bedroom full) and we are in deep discussion on our color palette. Sounds like we are going to have a good group joining us. Something to look forward to doing after the holidays.
Hi Peggy! I was getting worried that Sami said no, she didn’t like this quilt. Only a bedroom full of fabric?! Won’t this be fun?! I wonder what your color palate is going to be . . . ~smile~ Roseanne
I wonder too! I am trying to figure it out myself. Trying to decide between 2 ideas. Looking forward to seeing yours. I am really getting excited about this project.
Me, too! ~smile~ Roseanne
I am in!! January is a great start time, and I have a variegated lt grey to dk grey jelly roll to use, but it might mean I get to look for fabric…don’t nearly have enough!
Hi Carol! Oooh, a grey to dark grey jelly roll . . . that will look fabulous. Enhancing fabric for a specific project doesn’t count at all – it is NEEDED. ~smile~ Roseanne
I want to make one too! Since it will be January I will have some time!
Hi Shannon,
Oh, I’m so happy you want to join in. You have (we all have) lots of time to think about your color(s) and fabrics. What colors are you going to use?! ~smile~ Roseanne
I like the blues in the original quilt. I’m going to see if I can pick some Kona cotton colors for mine.
Yup – me, too! I don’t know if I can replicate it exactly but the idea will certainly be similar. ~smile~ Roseanne
I’m am totally in! 🙂 Time to commence planning. Giggle giggle!
Hi Cindy! YAYAYAY! I know it’s going to have a modern feel . . . what kind of fabrics will you use. I cannot wait to see. ~smile~ Roseanne
A simple but very effective quilt, I love the colour graduations. I’m thinking, I do have a jelly roll or several lying about, so tempted……….
Hi Kate,
Well, you will have to think about it. I don’t know if you can part with one of those jelly rolls . . . or more importantly, if they are the PERFECT one for this particular project. Hmm. Serious contemplation needed! ~smile~ Roseanne
I would like to make this quilt also, and I have time to pick out the perfect fabric!
Hi Maureen! Absolutely fabulous – I am so glad you would like to join in. I can’t wait to see what you pick out . . . ~smile~ Roseanne
Oh I love this quilt and I think I have the perfect Island Batik strip pack to do it with!! Fun little polka dots in girly colors, I will give it some thought, since you are not doing it until after the Holidays I ‘might’ have some time:)
Hi Vicki!
Polka dots . . . my absolute favorite print! And in batiks – my want-to-love fabric. Sounds like a win/win to me. I hope you think yourself into joining. ~smile~ Roseanne
