SAHRR2022 – Round Three Wonky Star Power

Today is Round Three of the Stay At Home Round Robin or SAHRR2022 for short. We get to select this week’s prompt and our choice is a star block. Star block? Didn’t we select a star block as our center medallion? Yes. Yes, we did but we LOVE star blocks and one can never have too many star blocks sprinkled throughout a quilt piece. We took a page out of last year’s SAHRR when Wendy from Pieceful Thoughts of My Quilting Life selected the wonky star.

Star Block the Wonky Way

So far in the SAHRR2022, we have shared our center block along with a heart-shaped curve block and a nifty diamond block. Until recently, we were making this as a wall hanging for Addison to compliment her ballerina quilt but she received a new big-girl dresser for her bedroom. Andrea asked if we might be able to make a dresser runner? Heck yeah! It is very easy to switch things up this early in the game. We need a runner that ends up being 18″ x 36″.

Don’t be alarmed by the label wonky! I’ll walk you through our steps in the next section but feel free to add your favorite star as the border . . . or not, if this doesn’t fit your vision.

Details on our Wonky Star Block

Here’s the nitty-gritty on how we made our two wonky star blocks. It starts out simple with nine – 2.5″ square background fabric pieces.

Next, select a feature fabric for one of the rays which is also a 2.5″ square. Put right sides together and sew a random seam. Trim the seam to 1/4″ and then press and admire! Select the second feature fabric – we went random with the colors but you could make them all the same – match right sides together and sew a second random seam. Trim to 1/4″ and press open – ooh, it’s looking good. Now trim the entire block to 2.5″ and repeat all the steps three more times to complete all eight rays of the star.

Here’s a repeat of that nine-patch layout, only this time the star rays are complete. Sew them together for your finished wonky star block, step back and admire. I’ll bet you can’t help but smile at them.

Roseanne, I am slow to the party this week but my plan is to only make 4 wonky stars and use them for corner stones with the next round. I am trying not to make a really large quilt this time. I love wonky stars. You rock! Have a wonderful day!
