SAHRR2022 – Diamond From an HRT Round Two
Today is Round Two of the Stay At Home Round Robin or SAHRR2022 for short. Emily at The Darling Dogwood gets this week’s party started with her choice of the diamond block. I spent a bit of time looking on Pinterest at potential diamond blocks . . . and a whole bunch more stuff that was totally unrelated. The next thing I knew I was looking at storage ideas for the garage . . . how did I get there?!! After careful consideration, we decided that the HRT (half-rectangle triangle) would work best for us.
Diamond Block the Easy Way
Last week, we shared our first round block of a heart-shaped drunkards’ path block. We haven’t officially mentioned that we are using the leftover fabric from Addison’s Ballerina quilt from the Tula Pink Fairy lineup. Here’s a quick snapshot of how four HRT blocks form an easy diamond block.

Details on our Diamond Block
Here’s the nitty-gritty on how we made our four HRT pieces that form the diamond block in a pictorial slideshow and written details below. We started out with four rectangles each (4.5″ x 7″) of the background and feature color. You could make each facet of the diamond a different color but we chose to keep them all the same.
Next, draw a diagonal line on the reverse side one-half inch from the top and bottom edge as shown in the second photo. Cut all pieces on the line – I layered all of my pieces so there was only one line drawn. Carefully line up one background and fabric piece from the two different halves and a stitch one-quarter inch seam. The pieces will not line up exactly – there should be about a quarter-inch overhang, which means your seam will meet in the valley of that overlap. Square-up and trim your HRT to 3.5″ x 6.5″ (we used a Bloc_Loc ruler). Once trimmed, you will notice a quarter-inch area of the alternate fabric in the diagonal corners. This permits the seam allowance to give you a nearly perfect point! Once trimmed, layout the four finished HRTs into a diamond shape.

Finally, ta-da! Here’s our diamond block on the design wall, next to our star center block. We need to work on what the layout is going to be!

Hi Roseanne. What a great tutorial on making hrt’s. Now we just need to see your quilt in progress! 😉
Great method for HRTs, Roseanne. I love your diamond block. Looking forward to seeing the entire layout!
nice! I love this fabric line especially!
HRTs are the place where I always forget to lay the pieces mirror imaged! LOL. But I’m learning. Great Diamond you got there.
That’s a great tutorial and your diamond looks perfect! Thanks, Roseanne! I’m doing lots of thinking about how I will make diamonds for my project. Fun!
That Internet Rabbit Hole gets me every time! LOL!! I like the way you put together your diamond. You make it look so easy. Will stay tuned for more of this. Will this be a wall hanging for the Princess??
Great way to make a diamond! 🙂
