SAHRR Round Five Wonky-Star Border
Wendy at Pieceful Thoughts of My Quilting Life chose the block for Round Five in the Stay-At-Home Round Robin and it’s a Wonky-Star. Seven of us quilting bloggers are participating in this quilt-along hosted by Quilting Gail. It’s not too late to jump in if you’d like to play along. Earlier this year we’ve selected our center block, added some Piano Keys, Plus Signed up a border, added a gaggle of Flying Geese, and finally, a checkerboard border. Are you ready to get your wonk on?
When Wendy selected the Wonky-Star block, my first thought was oh, boy. I’m not good at anything wonky and I have no idea how to make this block for a border. Naturally, I immediately went to Pinterest to see what others have shared in the Wonky-Star genre. Luckily, I found this tutorial shared by Sarah at Berry Barn Designs. Her size block was different from what we wanted but the math was easy to figure out (even for me!). Plus, in my mind, this became a different spin on a 9-patch block.
We started with a whole bunch of 1.5″ squares in both the background and feature fabrics. Chain sewing is definitely your friend for this block as I layered two pieces and randomly sewed an angle on the first side.
After trimming the seam and pressing the first-star-point, you line up the second point fabric with the background piece. You can see the oversized red fabric that will be trimmed off shortly.
Our second-star-point has been added and pressed. Trimming everything to a 1.5″ square creates just a few scraps. We had to quickly sew these star points into a test wonky-star block and here’s our layout.
You will easily see that I have a bit of an issue creating wonky-star points. Apparently, I sew the points a bit too uniform . . . I need to try a little harder to get my wonk on!
Here are our first four Wonky-Star blocks – aren’t they just the cutest?!
Now the decision shifted to how many do we need to make, and how many sides are we going to add them to? Top or side; top and side; both sides; or top and bottom . . .
In the end, top and bottom won out and here we go:
Just two Rounds to go . . .
