Anja’s Gaggle of Geese

Anja from Anja Quilts selected the Flying Geese block for the third round in the Stay-At-Home Round-Robin. It turns out that she is not working with a gaggle of geese but rather a flock. A gaggle refers to a group of geese that are NOT in flight and they certainly need to be flying for our quilts. Be sure you check out Anja’s post today for her border and tips along with this week’s linky party.

Gaggle Going On

It seems we really several decisions to make for our gaggle or flock of flying geese. First, there are a plethora of different methods for making the Flying Geese block. Next, dimensions were another important decision and how many borders we should add. Finally, of course, what color or colors of fabric would work best? Addressed first is the decision to use all of the fabric colors for the geese body and white for the sky sections.

Trimming the Geese fabric

That decision quickly led us to the best method for making the Flying Geese blocks. While the quick methods of making four or eight at one time are nice, in this case, we only needed a few of each fabric color. That sounds like the perfect storm and reason for using the Flying Geese Ruler by Fons & Porter.

What Size Gaggle

The quilt top size through Round Two measured 21.5″ x 24.5″, and that was an important factor in deciding what size Flying Geese we could use.

Gaggle awaiting their friends

Both were divisible by three so our choices were 1.5″x3″ or 3″x6″. The latter was just too big so we chose the first size. At this time we also chose to add this border to only the top and bottom edges. We needed a total of 28 for our gaggle or flock, and here is one side’s border.

From Gaggle to Flock

The creation of the geese went quickly and it was in no time at all that we had both colorful borders on.

Our piece now measures 21.5″ x 30.5″ – stay tuned for the next round! We will be announcing Round 4 next week Monday on February 8th, and here is a list of all the hosts:

Love your FG! I am so interested in what the next round is, and trying to decide whether to begin on a second version of the block with this round…decisions, decisions. I can see why you only did two sides with that size FG. It is looking terrific and I am trying so hard to think what so many more borders will give us…..3 more rounds is a lot!
