Ruler Storage – Repurpose of Another Bag
As you recall, not too long ago I went to a ruler sale at Quilter’s Rule in Waterford, Wisconsin. I picked up a few different rulers – I now have a total of eight. I told Sue I wanted to find a clever way to store them where they are handy and accessible but not in the way. Luckily for me, she took herself to the internet and found the Omnigear Chevron On The Go Carry Bag.
The carryall is big enough to hold an 18″ x 24″ mat, but it also has all these cool pockets. I thought this might be perfect because I can hang it from the side of my sewing table and use the pockets for the rulers. Should we ever get to participate in a retreat or some other event where we need to pack a mat, we’re all set!
Ruler Storage
Here is the bag so you can see all the different pouches. I really like the mesh pocket at the bottom – that makes it really easy to see what’s inside. Two of my longer rulers fit well in the other bottom pocket, and stick out a bit so I can see what they are.
I decided to hang the bag (without the strap) on the side of my sewing table. After using two of those little hooks that you can hang cups on or other lightweight items, it fit just perfectly. I tucked the strap into one of the pockets – you never know when you might need it. You can see the rulers sticking slightly out of the left pocket, and the mesh on the bottom right. I’ll give this a test run for a while and see if it works in the long run. It sure seems like it will as they’re handy but not in the way.

That’s a very cool retreat bag! It doesn’t look that big from your pictures, but it can hold a 18 x 24 mat?? Wow. Thanks for sharing!
Hi Liz,
Yup, the last pocket or the one in the very back is one large opening so a mat that size would easily slip in. It’s a pretty neat bag! ~smile~ Roseanne
Now isn’t that a clever way to store those rulers! Nicely done!
Hi Susan,
Thanks! I don’t know if it’s the best way, but it sure is easy and handy. ~smile~ Roseanne
This is a great bag! I made a ruler storage bag years ago but then the cutting mats of the past increased just a little by size and would no longer fit. That is ok though, I bought a nice bag. I do love the homemade ones though!
Hi,
I was going to make my own! I thought about making pockets specifically for each ruler. My only concern was that it wouldn’t be stiff enough to hold up under the weight. So, I basically took the easy way out – and the bag can be used as a bag, too. ~smile~ Roseanne
I’ve been trying to think of a good way to organize my rulers too! I’m not sure this bag would work for me, but I love that you found a solution and it gives me more to think about!
Hi Jayne,
I’m not sure if this is the final answer, but it works for now. It is much better than just being stacked in a drawer, and they were taking up too much space in my limited drawers. So, we’ll see! ~smile~ Roseanne
Looks like you have an attractive option for storage. My solution is nails in the wall. It’s not pretty but it works. 🙂
Hi Cindy,
That is a great solution – you can easily see what you have. My new sewing table is kind of an island or peninsula actually. I’m not near a wall, and I would hate to have to get UP to select a ruler. ~smile~ Roseanne
You could even put labels on each pocket to know what is in it at a glance-in case you are in a hurry(like me).
Hi Vicki,
HAHA – since I haven’t even removed the layer of “remove before use” stuff – tape/paper/whatever it is, I don’t think that’s a HUGE worry for me. Heehee – that really makes me chuckle this morning! Just the whole picture – oooh, I need that flower shaped ruler . . . hurry . . . which pocket is it in??! Thanks for the giggle. ~smile~ Roseanne
