RSC Rainbow Scrap Challenge 2021 Participant

Angela at So Scrappy hosts the Rainbow Scrap Challenge (RSC) and has done so for several years. Throughout my blog visits to friends’ websites, I have noticed that many participate in the RSC monthly color challenge. Why not jump into the fray and join the fun, I suggested to Sue. Angela announces a designated color for each month and you sew a block or blocks of your choice in that color. The last two months of the year are sort of assigned as a catch-up/assembly or as in 2020 to light and dark neutrals. Past years have had not only assigned colors but also a block.

RSC January Pink Fabrics

Pink is the focus color Angela chose for January and it seems as if we don’t have a plethora of scraps in that hue. I can’t help but wonder why not when we have a sweet little one who is quite the girly girl, but I digress.

Sue did her due diligence and found us some pretty pinks to work with! I really want to use two pink colors for this block but we’re having a hard time finding a darker hue to go with that bigger piece of light pink. It has just a wee bit of a salmon cast to it.

RSC January Block

Since this is our first time participating in the RSC challenge, we also needed to select a block or blocks to use each month. With SO many blocks to choose from – so many GOOD blocks to choose from, and then it begs the question as to size. Choices, choices, choices. Hmm. Maybe we should have a destination in mind for these blocks, huh?! Hmm.

I happened upon this block called Get The Point by Carrie Nelson, from Quiltmaker’s 100 Blocks, vol. 3 (block #291). Pinwheels combined with a day/night mirror image is something we enjoy a great deal.

Shockingly enough, Sue didn’t exactly trust my math or notes about how to make this block but she did watch a YouTube Quiltmaker Magazine video about how to make it. I don’t know why she would distrust my math abilities!

RSC Pink Abundance

Sew without further ado, here is our very first RSC block in shades of both light and dark pink.

I’d hoped to share the yellow February block now, too, but it has not been started. Sue has pulled the fabrics to tempt me but other priorities keep pulling me away.

I do like this block! I’m on my second year of doing one small RSC project and it seems to fit in my schedule ok. I’ve done Jen of PBJ’s color challenge for a few years too.

Such a cheerful block. I looked at it and thought, HMMM, how does that go together but then you showed all the pieces and the light bulb went on! I seem to create lots of scraps but never of the size I want when I go looking. Then I have to cut the bigger ones and Ta Da….more scraps!!

  6. Whoo Hoo!!! I like those blocks and the contrast of Dark and light!! Go you!! and glad you jumped in!!

Love the blocks! This will be a very striking quilt when done.

  9. I am so very glad you’ve hopped into the oh-so-warm waters (I mean Angela hails from FL) of RSC! It’s addictive. I wish we didn’t have a Great Lake between us because I’d just hop on over to you and share some of my pink bounty! I’d drop it safely on your porch and back away, no worries 😉 Now, just a warning, you may find some reason (Rose doesn’t call me an mmm-nabler for nuthin’) to purchase some more pinks for a quilt for said baby girl, AND even for her mama, and then you’d have some more pink scraps to help out where there are those gaps, just sayin’
