Rainy Day Spiral Quilt Finished OMG

There was no plan back when we picked up a cute jelly roll comprised of the Rainy Day fabric line by Me and My Sister.  That was in May of 2017, and it has been awaiting its day in the sun.  Also included in that order was two yards of Puddles from the same line that was going to be the backing.  The 16-Patch Framed 4-Patch Tutorial pattern was used for the second time.  We made this quilt once before, using a Cosmic Fusion jelly roll, and you can read about all the details if you are interested.  The first time, we followed the pattern exactly as Mary shared it.  You can see in this picture how it was quilted using a spiral design.

A Rainy Day Beginning

Back in April, we sorted all of the Rainy Day strips choosing which would represent the middle squares.  Also needed were 16 strips that had something in common for the frames around those center four-patch blocks.  Sue cut, I sewed and in no time at all, we had a quilt top.  Should we add borders?

We had two yards of one of the fabrics to use as a border if we wanted??!  We did choose to do so, and we also added a multi-colored border in between from the leftover strip scraps.  I like using up all of the scraps, don’t you?  A very sophisticated method of choosing the strips randomly was utilized.  Meet my randomizing Ziplock bag!

A Rainy Quilting Pause

My mind’s eye could see how this quilt should be quilted!  No dilemmas for this quilt top and I even shared my spiral quilting idea a while ago.  An oval spiral stencil worked well, and the Pounce pad marking was done.  Pause!  We put this whole project on a far back burner because we needed to complete George the Giraffe.  So this quilt top that was all layered and all marked and this close || to going under the quilting needle was set aside. And forgotten about.  Except when I walked into the sewing room.  There it was, folded on the side chair, smirking at me.

Time to Press a Rainy Resume 

Fortunately, George was easy to quilt in crosshatch pattern.  Some additional accents were added after the initial quilting was complete, and we called it a day.  Was Rainy Day to become a focus?  Nope!  Not until mid-April was Rainy Day was unfolded – how did the Pounce markings hold up??  They did not hold up.  Sue and I couldn’t even see the original markings.  Who knew and lesson learned.  I took a boatload of pictures to show how this ended up being quilted but you only need to look at the spiral picture above for the answer.  I took the easy way out with one big huge spiral.  Here’s the pretty backing we used – a whole bunch of rainbow-colored spirals.

This is the first time I used up one of the Aurifil thread cones!  Never fear though – I have plenty to replace this nearly empty one.

Rainy Day OMG Finish

We chose this project as our May OMG project and linked up on Patty’s Elm Street Quilts.  We are happy that this quilt top has moved to the completion column.  It is also a Quarter 2 finish and there is still a month to go!  Woot-woot.  I’m going to share a whole post about the spiral quilting process used.  I wouldn’t want to waste all those photos!    

With rain, high winds and lack of sunlight it is a miracle you can see any of these photos at all.  I hope to get more over the holiday weekend as I think this puppy is being listed in our Etsy shop.  We need some pretty and posed photos for that!
