Potato May Monthly Color Challenge Block

We started off the new year playing along with Jen at Patterns By Jen. The monthly color parade this year focuses on fruits and veggies. Jen also switched it up this year by offering two different sizes of the block with a 6-inch and a 12-inch. We are switching it up ourselves this year by making the block with the feature color along with a lighter/darker version of the same color. That is not our usual wheelhouse that’s for sure! Jen offers each block for free for the current month and then they are available for only $1 after the month ends.

Brown Potato Not Red

I am happy to report that after the struggle earlier this year with getting our blocks completed in a timely manner, we are all caught up now! Woohoo! For the month of May, the brown potato is the focus. I love potatoes any way I can eat them – sliced, diced, mashed, baked, fried, or boiled. Campfire potatoes on the grill, all wrapped in tinfoil with some onions, parmesan cheese, butter or olive oil, salt, and pepper while cooked until tender is one of my favorites for the summer.

Here is our May brown potato block. I have to say that I really enjoy making the center section of a square-in-a-square. The other sections are just a two-patch and some half-square triangles. We chose the 12″ square to concentrate on but if you pop over to Jen’s website, you will find the 6″ version.

Potato Fabric Families

Sue did a good job of pulling the fabrics for this subject matter. I think the lighter brown fabric actually look like small potatoes from a distance.

These are our first five blocks from the monthly challenge so far. It is going to be a challenge to find a sashing strip to accent these five colors. I am looking to find a fun polka-dotted fabric (that’s no surprise, right Laura?!) that has multiple colors in it. We’ll see how I do!

I like brown russet potatoes for baking, but are always my fave. I love your fabric choices for the blocks.

Those campfire potatoes sound great. Your block represents the potato really well!

Roseanne your monthly challenge is looking good. I have been procrastinating since I am using Alison Glass fabrics and she doesn’t really do “brown” so mine will probably be some deep gold. I have no idea with such a rainbow of colors what we should use for sashing. I still have last years blocks I need to put together. LOL! Love your colors.

  5. Yep, I can see the eyes on those potatoes! LOL I’ll be sharing my version of campfire potatoes sometime this week when I post my block!! Your recipe sounds very good and may have to try adding a few of those extra ingredients next time we make them!!

I’m with you on the potatoes, and now must give your recipe a try! I would add, cheese and sour cream goes with just about any way you can make potatoes!!

The title of you post caught my attention!!! When you mentioned sashing, I immediately thought of black or dark grey … then you mentioned polka dots … then I thought, “use black or dark grey and applique little circles of the colours you used in the blocks!” … ya, I know, a fun idea, but not one I’d tackle!!! 🙂

I was thinking black when you said you were looking for sashing and then you said polka dots. Great idea. Love your “potato” block. And now I’m hungry for potatoes!! LOL.

Yea for Roseanna! Interesting colors you have chosen and BTW. I love potatoes also – they provide good potassium, they like eggs get a “raw” deal! I think they are good for us! Hugs
