Postcard Pillow Sham Debacle

Perhaps you were not aware, but I had a major meltdown.  M.A.J.O.R.  Of course I kept it on the down low as I’m not one to complain.  HAHAHAHA!  If you believe that, I have some swampland you can buy.  I can bellyache to Sue like no other.  Like a dog with a bone, and a big one at that.  What was my meltdown subject you may ask?  Why am I writing a post about it?

Sham peek

No quilting!!  What?!

Here is the sneak peek photo of the pillow shams causing the meltdown.  Notice there is NO QUILTING in the picture above?!!  I didn’t note that until they were all sewn together and posing for this Postcard photo which I happily shared last Friday.

Postcard Finished

Still not quilted but too far away – who can tell?!  ME!

It is so obvious that the shams do not have that wonderful crinkly goodness that the quilt has.  How could I miss that?! (And doesn’t that quilt look fabulous – just saying!)

Postcard Sham Debacle Resolution

A few blogger friends caught me right in the midst of my meltdown.  They received the news that made me hang my head and (almost) cry.  No real tears because come on – it’s only fabric.  In my head, I vowed to make more HSTs – as many as it took until I loved them as much as the quilt.  Plenty of sympathy was shared and some virtual hugs.  They did help but the shams remained.  Taunting me, saying HA HA quietly, until I threw them in the closet at night and closed the door tight!

Enter Sherry from Powered By Quilting and her post about pillows.  Cue the music – a chorus of angels singing and a slight glow over her head.  Can you picture it?!  I read her post, enjoyed her tutorial and wished I had followed it.  When I wrote and told her all of those same thoughts she replied.  One simple little sentence would change my whole outlook.  Are you ready?!  “You can always hand quilt some of them.”  Wait.  What?  I can always hand quilt some of them.  I CAN always hand quilt them.  Not only can I but I will, thank you for the suggestion.  Holy moly Batman – what an easy solution.

Solution or Not?!

Oddly enough, I just said to Sue that I need a handwork project (so does she).  We have a vacation coming up and we usually bring something along to do on the airplane ride or other down time.  Lunch break is also another option if I want them finished sooner than mid-June.  The debacle is on its way to being solved.  That made for very short-lived whining.  Or will it be solved at all – maybe I no longer care about the darn pillow shams as we have too many other things to focus on.  Hmm?!?!  What would you do??

  1. Oh MY! Such an earthshaking problem! BooHoo! Thank goodness for the quilting rescuer! TaDa! Awesome solution! Now we need photos of the second reveal! 🙂

Wonderful solution, though I think they’re fine without the quilting!

  3. Well Roseanne, if they really do bother you so much, I definitely think you should take them apart and quilt them. I wouldn’t hand quilt because they wouldn’t match the spread, unless you want to ass some hand Quilting to there too….I bet that made you smile and faint in your chair! Lol😊. But really, it doesn’t take too long to unsew and you will be much happier for the years you will enjoy this quilt❤️❤️

Since you asked for my two cents (you did, didn’t you?) Life is too short, there are waaayyyy more projects to try, and they look beautiful as they are. Love your completed projects as you would want to be love – just as you are! Seriously though I found a wonderful quote by Debi Payne Designs: “Imperfection is a form of Freedom”. Oh yes it is!

Hello Roseanne; I did not notice they were not quilted, just how beautiful all of the fabulous colors worked brilliantly together in this design! Plus, also thinking to myself that I would love to make a full blown quilted bed cover, but I do not know if I could handle it. LOL. You sure did a great job! For the pillow covers, the choice is totally up to you and what you want to do. It would make for a fun project to take with and work on at any time until they were both finished and you were satisfied to put them back on the bed. I look forward to seeing what you decide! Have a great day!

I think they look awesome, just as they are! Most of us (including me) don’t even make matching pillows! And yours are a dream!

One of my best skills is seam ripping — send them over and I’ll expertly rip those suckers and send them back to you 🙂

  8. Shannon Fleming says:

I like Pam’s idea of using the seam ripper! If you can, that is. Otherwise the hand stitching is a good option. I think they should be quilted to match the bed. I’m all for matchy, matchy!

I don’t have an issue with them, but they are not on my bed. I think hand quilting them is a great idea, it gives you a project, and at this point if they aren’t on your bed, what does it matter if they are out of commission for a few months?

  10. I’m glad I could help and at least give you another option! 🙂

  11. I agree with the other commenters, I didn’t even notice they weren’t quilted until you pointed it out. Think about how much it bothers you. If not as much as before and you can live without them being quilted, then so be it. They still look great with that beautiful quilt. However, big quilting would be a fun addition, if you still want to get them quilted.

Another example of being too hard on yourself! It’s easy to do…we all do it! Meltdowns happen, but I like your quote…it’s only fabric. And it is. It’s taken me years to get to that point! Luckily you found the perfect solution! I love the picture of the quilt and pillows! They are gorgeous!

I really didn’t notice that the shams weren’t quilted. I was just looking at the beautiful quilt. So glad you found a solution AND hand quilting is so relaxing.

  14. I didn’t notice that the pillows weren’t quilted — I don’t always quilt my pillows. Big stitch hand quilting would work or if it bothers you that much just take the back off and quilt them — that might be the quickest route. I think they are beautiful as is 🙂

  15. Pam says:

I don’t really think it matters that they aren’t quilted. If it bothers you that much, you could just unstitch the backing off the pillow shams and quilt them and put it back. I think it would take less time to do that than to hand stitch them. I know it is frustrating, but not the end of the world. Your quilt is beautiful and the pillows look nice on the bed. Also, you could add some more solid color, smaller pillows around it (that aren’t quilted).
