Plan Ahead for Memorial Day, Independence Day and Labor Day

I hang up appropriate seasonal wall hangings both at home and in my office (usually – right now the Let It Snow piece shown below is still above the fireplace with some cute R & S letters in front of it made out of a book!).  Sometimes they are specific to the holiday, like Valentine’s Day and this wall hanging that only sees the light of day in February:

Other times, I hang up a general project to cover several months or holidays.  Like the snowmen wall hanging shared in the Cross Stitch and Quilting post <link>, this wall hanging easily covers all the winter months.  It usually goes up right after Thanksgiving along with this one:

For the celebration of the beginning of summer, and its unofficial start on Memorial Day, I like to hang up our flag wall hanging featured in the header.  We have actually made two of these because I just HAD to have it hanging in a school setting since it honors the National Anthem:

This flag was made using yoyos.  They are so easy to make – just circles cut out in your favorite fabric and then gathered with a running stitch about a ¼” from the raw edge.  You don’t even have to worry about the raw edges fraying later because in this case they were sewn on with the raw edges turned toward the flag fabric – or wrong side down.  We used assorted blue buttons centered in the middle of the red assorted fabric yoyos to sew the yoyos to the flag material.  It is one of my favorite wall hangings – honestly, I love just about everything we make because we only make things we love.  Funny how that works . . . ~smile~
So, are you interested in sewing some seasonal wall hangings?  They are usually much smaller than quilts, they don’t require a lot of quilting because they are rarely washed very often, and they can offer you a lot of bang for your decorating buck.  Not to mention feeding the creative side of your brain . . . and the search for the perfect pattern.  Wow – with all that going for it, how can you not want to start with a small wall hanging?!
