Olaf Baby Quilt for a Sweet Girl

During the Black Friday sales and while ordering some other fabrics, I stumbled upon this Olaf panel.  Shortly thereafter, Andrea announced that Addison’s birthday party theme would be Olaf from Frozen.  What??!!  Another quilting project that has just fallen into place by happenstance.  Woot woot!

Addison Brooke’s birthday is January 4th and that sweet girl is a huge bright spot to lighten anyone’s spirits.  Our girl turned ONE last Saturday and we were attending her Frozen-inspired birthday party with the perfect gift (in our opinion, anyway).  We kept it a secret from her (very easy) and her mom (not so easy!) so that there was a surprise element.  It’s no fun knowing what your presents are before you open them, is it?!

A nice shade of aqua Minky was used as the backing for this panel because Addison is very fond of nice soft textures.  She’ll bury her face onto it once she gets a little tired.  The colors represented above are more accurate than the awful pictures shared below including the pretty purple binding we used.  Days and days with no sun don’t help picture taking – just saying.

Olaf Minky Quilting

This was my first time quilting with Minky and I had no issues at all.  Besides a little bit more lint in the bobbin area, it didn’t stretch or wrinkle or pose any problems.

Also, it absorbs or covers up the thread so it really didn’t matter what color I chose for quilting in the bobbin.  I stitched around Olaf and you can kind of see the reverse outline in the photo on the left.  In the background area, I chose a very loose stipple so it would stay nice and soft.  As mentioned above, we had a pretty, deep purple-hued binding already cut in the stash drawer.  It looked so nice with the aqua as well as the grays, light blues and navy.

Olaf Baby Quilt Finish

This was a fun and quick project.  Addison really didn’t need another quilt, but it was just serendipity.  That word rather describes Addison in the perfect way, “the occurrence and development of events by chance in a happy or beneficial way.”

Olaf Themed Party Photos

Usually, these photos are shared during our Thursday “loves” post but Addison deserves her own special birthday post.  Don’t you think?!

Here is Addison with her new quilt and her spiffy birthday outfit.  She had to use one finger to have her new Frozen doll from GG.  Gaga helped her open her gifts and handed the magic tissue paper over to Dominic.  What exactly does this balloon say, Auntie Sue??  She had time for a little reading – two, she said – before it was time for frosting.  And cake – lots of cake, on her hands, on her tights, in her mouth.  Yummy!  And sweet Dominic enjoyed the heck out of that tissue paper.  Scrunching it, wearing it like a hat, and then starting over.  Gosh we had a fun time!!

  1. Somehow I missed this post. Such a perfect gift for this special girl.

  2. Good to hear your maiden voyage with minky went well. I’ve never braved anything other than quilting cotton on the back of my quilts, so it was encouraging to hear!

  3. And that is exactly why I do not make quilty goals for the year keeping my lap free and clear for all kinds of quilty squirrels to run into. But enough about what I don’t do. Right now I do wish I was that little girl (Addison) who is the lucky recipient of this darling quilt.
I promise I’d share my balloons and cake with you 🙂

Olaf is wonderful, and with a minky backing? It will be loved and loved and loved! I don’t do so well with minky myself, but oh how I love to snuggle in it with a mug of hot cocoa.

Serendipity is how I describe my quilting. Addison didn’t really need enough quilt—no such thing my dear friend and fellow partner in over quilt indulging

Oh WOW!!! What a perfect co-incidence!!!
I haven’t had problems with Minkie either, but I do make sure that it’s well secured before quilting (spray baste and pins).
    Happy Quilting! 🙂
