Off-The-Rails Quilt Tutorial Monday

Happy Memorial Day Monday to all!  Mondays mean time to share a tutorial for a quilt, and today’s tutorial is called Off The Rails by Quiltification.  It is available on Craftsy as a free download pattern.  This is a beginner quilt and it includes instructions for several different sizes.  The Off-The-Rails pattern in general has many variations out there.  This is also another quilt that can be made with just one jelly roll (for the lap size) and 3 yards for the backing.  I am sure most of us have a jelly roll hanging around that we want to use up.  I know we do!

Off-The-Rails

The instructions for the Off-The-Rail baby quilt use only 24 strips from a jelly roll.  As always, if you like to cut your own 2.5″ strips you would need approximately 1.75 yards.

The basic pattern for this quilt is three strips sewn together into a strip set, and then cut into 6.5″ blocks.  These instructions have strip one and three the same sandwiched around an opposite strip.  The baby quilt calls for 48 of these blocks set into a 6 x 8 pattern.  Once they are all together you lay the blocks alternating the direction of the strips.

An alternative would be to use three different strips instead two of the same in each block.  You might also add some of the coordinating strips leftover from the jelly roll as borders.  That would also add a bit to the width and length so you would need additional fabric for the backing.

I think it might be fun to make this quilt in just three colors or fabrics.  Maybe three shades of pink, or black/gray/white . . . or all solids, all dots . . . The choice is up to you!  What do you think – is this a quilt you may try or have tried?

  1. This looks like a quick make. I sure could use one for my two week old niece. Thanks for posting it so I didn’t have to search around. Kind of nice having someone else doing all the thinking for a change.

Good Morning! It does look like a quick make. I’m adding it to my mental list, although it seems it is getting too long for me to remember. HAHA ~smile~
