Interesting Harry Potter HP Day

Did you know today is Harry Potter’s a.k.a. HP birthday?  The July 31, 1980, birthday while not actually mentioned in the books has been deduced through various clues.  Clearly, everyone has a birthday and in our book, it is worth celebrating!  I am not, however, baking him a cake or even cupcakes.

HP Confession

Sue and I have not read a single, solitary Harry Potter book.  We did, however, bring a first edition volume back from England once when a certain young nephew wanted to read the next book before it was released in the USA.  Hmm, I wonder what has happened to that book?  Considering the weight and heft of those books, that was quite kind of us.  Of course, it was before suitcases had weight restrictions and you could carry on as much or as little as you wanted.  We even wore our shoes the whole time while flying back in those days.

HP Birthday

Happy Happy Birthday to Harry, and many more.  Next year is a BIG year for him, hey?  Turning the big 4-0 is difficult for many people, although it didn’t phase us one bit.  It’s just a number!  Since I now am aware of the big event, I have a great way for us to celebrate it next year.  On my mental to-do list is a bookcase (surprise, Sue!).  It seems rather fitting to me to make one with a few HP titles on one of the shelves.  How do you plan on celebrating the special day, if you do?

HP Inspirational Bookcase

Do you ever check your own Pinterest PINs?  I did, to find this exact PIN for a bookcase by Jen at DeJong Dream House.  Her cool quilt was made for a retiring librarian in their school district.  That resonates with us greatly – books, school district – what better fit could there be?!

While we may not use the same personalizations she did in our quilt top, they are still great.  With only a year to find bits and pieces for book titles, as well as important items as interesting appliquéd additions . . .  Well, we may not have enough time.  HAHA!

you should look at this hp bookcase quilt.
I have been working on one, on and off for about 3 years.
I have to decide how I am going to do the base/feet of my bookcase.

It is such a great idea….but why no cake? I never turn down a reason to have cake!!! I think about quilts a long time in advance and still have trouble making that deadline. Wish I had a magic wand!

  4. We are big Harry fans at our house! I am making a book case quilt also. It is a long work in progress. Happy Birthday Harry and enjoy celebrating.

  5. Big Harry Potter fans at our house – we actually have read all the books! Maybe having kids the same age as Harry helped with that – or being a 5th grade teacher for so many years could be it! I love those bookshelf quilts – making one is on my to-do list. Do you think there is HP fabric you could use for some of the books?

  7. I love that library quilt! My sister is a librarian. <3

  8. I am also HP clueless (I keep that kinda quiet usually). I do love the bookcase quilt idea, though. What fun to gather the fabrics and embellishments! I’ll enjoy following your progress on this one!
