Insomnia, MQG, AQS and ABC

Now that’s an intriguing and odd title for a post, don’t you think?  How the heck am I going to tie this together into one pretty nice bow?  Surprisingly, they all are related in an odd sort of way.  Recently, I shared a great link in our Thursday loves post from Linda at Cozy Quilts for a Free Motion QAL that runs the whole calendar year for 2018.  There are three different levels for the sessions, so you can work at the level that fits you best or all three if you’d like.  Check it out if you are interested – it looks really cool!

Modern FMQ QAL

I have been considering taking some hands-on FMQ classes but this just might fit the bill.

Insomnia Solutions

Dealing very frequently with insomnia, I solve so many problems of the world during the middle of the night.  In the midst of a particularly long sleepless night (no sleep after 10:30pm and the alarm goes off at 4:30am) I was trying to deliberate my FMQ practice choices.  Besides the QAL link shared above, I also have been participating in Angela Walter’s Facebook FMQ challenge.  That reminds me – she started a new challenge on May 14th.  The topic is feathers!  I used to get email reminders about her videos and haven’t lately.  Hmm.  Here are two other possible/definite FMQ solutions for learning.

MQG – QuiltCon 2019

QuiltCon 2019

I told Sue I wanted to go to Nashville in February to the Modern Quilt Guid’s QuiltCon 2019.  Was she interested in joining me??!  They do not have their class schedule released yet, but I really want to take some hands-on classes AND not have to haul my sewing machine along with me.  That sounds just awful, and is one of the main drawbacks to taking a class at any quilt shop near me.  My Ellie Elna sewing machine is in a sunken table and I don’t want to dismantle everything just to learn.  The tradeoff just isn’t worth it to me.  Sewwwwwww, what to do, what to do?  It would be rather expensive to travel to Nashville.

AQS – Grand Rapids QuiltWeek

QuiltWeek

Has anyone ever heard of David Taylor Quilts?  He will be teaching a class called “Yes, You Can Stipple” at the AQS QuiltWeek in Grand Rapids.

Yes you can stipple class

I have pressured convinced Sue to take this class with me.  The picture above looks so cool, and so easy.  We get to sew on Bernina sewing machines!!  Yippee, a different machine than I’ve ever experienced.  We will buy a kit in class for $30 and then spend three hours with David.  I hope he’s a good teacher and that we learn a lot.  Sue is nervous – she thinks she can’t do this.  Heck, we both got this.  Boom – mike drop.  No doubt.

ABC

Well, Dominic hasn’t learned his yet but I do sing the ABC song to him along with the counting song.  On the quilting topic though, I use these letters when I can’t think of AQS or MQG.  They don’t really flow off the tongue well at all, while ABC is easy to remember.  So if I ever say I’m going to the ABC quilt show, that means it is some acronym that I can’t possibly recall.  It may or may not be either of these two shows as I am sure there are others.  Do you think the one class in GR is enough?  That coupled with the link shared here and Angela’s challenge may just be enough, right?  Obviously not enough but certainly able to point me firmly in a more comfortable direction.

Go to Nashville and on your way south pick me up!!

  2. I am sorry you struggle with insomnia, Roseanne! That can be so frustrating. I used to have more trouble with that when I was still teaching – a glass of milk and about 20 minutes of Candy Crush (so boring, lol!) would sometimes help. 🙂 I keep thinking I should focus more on learning FMQ, stippling at the very least, but stop short of actually practicing. A class for you and Sue sounds like fun!

I hate insomnia, enough said! Go to any class you can. I watch online classes but not the same as “being there”. I find doing it on a fat quarter size is so different from wrangling a quilt in a domestic machine too. But I keep trying.

My one piece of advice is don’t be discouraged after only one three hour class. Like any other skill, it will take hours of practice, but all of a sudden, it will click and you’ll be on your way. A hands on class will show you the basics. There are some great bloggers, You-tube videos, and books (check out your public library), to help you along. Mostly just relax and have fun and don’t expect a masterpiece on your first try.

I have good intentions to start those FMQ exercises. I’ll get there, just not right now.

  6. Anytime you can take a class is good, inspiration and learning come from many places. I like taking longarm classes every chance I get! I also have a portable Janome Gem that I can take with me for sewing and quilt classes, well worth the investment so I don’t have to lug a heavy machine.

Roseanne: Cindy wants us to go to Nashville too! We loved the classes we took a the Int’l Quilt Show in Chicago. I hope you get the chance to go to one or both of theses classes.

I’ve been meaning to quilt along with that first link but I just haven’t done it. Maybe for the summer I can give it a whirl. I hate changing up the feet on my machine to do all this which is so lame. The course catalogue is out for Quilt Con. If you go maybe I can meet you there. I’ve convinced my husband that he needs to take a holiday with me.

Oh yes you will be glad you took the class and it’s not all that far from you. I have taken several lecture long arm classes and the light bulb does come on! You will be in the right place to get help should you need it. Craftsy is another venue you might want to think about. They have some great teachers there too. I am headed to the MN show today also-meeting up with Wendy and friends:)

  10. I think any classes you take in free motion will give you little nuggets of knowledge, and hands on in a class will be helpful. Your acronym dilemma had me giggling. I can totally relate! I’m headed to the MN quilt show today. Yippee!
