Housewarming Gift A Roll of the Dice

Slumpville isn’t the best place to visit when you have oodles of free time available that could be used for sewing. I have definitely been living and staying there for the last few months. A recent A Roll of the Dice via a pattern release by our friend, Sandra, along with a blog hop pushed me out of Slumpville. Right into squirrel territory – a completely unplanned project otherwise referred to as Drop Everything And Make it. Here’s how our housewarming gift for Luke and Sarah came to be!

Rose Plants the Housewarming Seed

Rose definitely planted the housewarming seed and I snapped it up! Seriously, one minute I’m reading Sandra’s post, mentally wishing Helen a happy birthday, and the next minute – POW. I’m mentally selecting fabric for Sandra’s pattern, pursuing Rose’s post about the game board she made, and ordering Qwixx from Amazon with two-day delivery. Yikes! Let’s slow this down a bit, shall we?!

Rose from Something Rose Made was asked to test Sandra’s A Roll of the Dice pattern. Initially, she was going to make a baby quilt. But the inspiration hit her to switch to the pillow option for a game board. She cleverly added a tie binding to allow the game board to enclose the game. Her game choice was “Qwixx: A Fast Family Dice Game” – how many fast families do you know? I’m not sure if our gift recipients qualify as a “fast family” to be able to play the dice game! Perhaps the description needs to be amended a bit. HAHA! I love every.single.thing about Rose’s game board.

Fast Housewarming Gift

Seriously fast, as this housewarming gift was made in one hour and 50 minutes. That included selecting the fabric, starting to cut the needed pieces, switching background fabric, sewing the blocks, and pressing with our new alpaca pressing mat. I also quickly layered and quilted the piece, and sewed on the binding for hand stitching. All in 110 minutes! Amazing, wouldn’t you say? I’ll be you would like a few more details, though.

Sue selected some pretty primary colors to be surrounded by a black background. Once a few pieces were cut we switched the background to this gray-blue fabric instead. It looks a bit like denim to me!

It wasn’t long before the red, navy, yellow, green, orange, purple, and turquoise pieces were sewn together in a nifty quilt top. Sue even found some turquoise shoe laces that would make perfect ties similar to what Rose did! When it falls into place like that, it is meant to be, right?!

Finishing the Housewarming Gift

This gift is for a newly married couple that is moving into their new house not too far from us. We are THRILLED to have them here, although Sarah’s family in Ohio will miss them greatly. Both are huge dog lovers, so this background print just had to be a part of this gift.

Paw prints in bright colors led to some wavy quilting that was done in less than 5 minutes. I just eyeballed the spacing as I knew we didn’t want it to be too heavily quilted. Should I quilt in both directions? Nope. I zipped on a quick binding in royal blue that was leftover from another project and just like that it was nearly complete!

The couple closed on the house on Friday. Now we need to make an appointment to deliver the finished product! We will be sharing this on Sandra’s Saturday linky party for DrEAMi projects and our favorite Friday link ups.
